SUMMARY: Reporting to the Director of Public Programs and Adult Education, the Public Programs Manager manages an array of public programs reflecting the diversity of the Newberry’s core collections. Formats include lectures, discussions, film screenings, symposia, workshops, and performances for a variety of audiences. The manager takes primary responsibility for ensuring that all events meet the highest standards of quality, professionalism, and hospitality.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans and produces audience-centered events, working with speakers and other participants on program content and format; 
  • Ensures smooth operation of logistics and high-quality audience experience during events; 
  • Maintains communications with program participants, Newberry colleagues involved with specific programs, external partners, and funders; 
  • Oversees use of Monday.com project management system to organize and prioritize multiple events and other projects with varying timelines; 
  • Oversees use of registration software to gather records and reports, analyzes program statistics, and oversees maintenance of detailed program records;  
  • Works with the Communications department to develop marketing and publicity strategies to promote programs; 
  • Assists with audience research and program evaluation and analysis; 
  • Prepares and manages the annual budget;  
  • Researches funding opportunities and assists with drafting grant proposals and reports; 
  • Contributes to long-term planning and strategic direction for the department; 
  • Collaborates across the institution to develop programming integrated with exhibitions and broader library initiatives; 
  • Represents the Newberry with outside academic, professional, and cultural organizations, and builds relationships with current and prospective collaborative partners; 
  • Directs, supervises, and evaluates the work of a Program Coordinator, and; 
  • Performs other activities as required to achieve department, division, and library goals. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required: 

  • Master’s degree in a humanities or humanistic social sciences field, public history, or museum studies; or equivalent combination of education and experience Proven initiative and strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously 
  • Excellent public speaking and interpersonal skills, and clear and organized writing and editing  
  • Experience with supervision (could be employees, interns, volunteers, or similar) 
  • Microsoft Office suite proficiency 

Desired: 

  • Experience in producing public programs
  • Experience or training in project management and use of project management software 
  • Experience with the culture of academic institutions, public humanities institutions, or research libraries  

SCHEDULE:This is a full-time, exempt position, working 35 hours per week, with normal hours generally from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. The incumbent will frequently work evening hours and will occasionally work Saturday hours for programs, as needed. While remote work is possible, the incumbent will work primarily onsite.
