Welding/ Materials Engineer- Welding Laboratory

This position is in the Electric Boat Welding Engineering Laboratory and scales to accommodate a wide range of experience levels (entry to career experience). This position involves investigating and solving a complex variety of metallurgical welding issues related to welding process, procedures, and engineering of welding controls, techniques, and welding consumables to ensure consistent weld quality, mechanical properties, and freedom from metallurgical issues. The position involves interaction with a number of other organizations within Electric Boat, suppliers of equipment and welding consumables, and the Navy.
This position has the following specific functions:
Develop and qualify structural and pipe welding procedures
Responsible for the quality and operability of welding procedures with respect to weld metal mechanical properties, weld quality, equipment reliability, and clarity of welder/operator instructions
Provide Subject Matter Expertise (SME) on welding processes and techniques, welding procedure qualification, welding equipment, and ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical issues related to welding and welding consumables
Perform and support investigations to evaluate and adjudicate metallurgical, weld quality and workmanship issues as well as interpretations, deviations, or non-conformances to welding procedures, qualification requirements, specifications, and general work practice requirements
Serve as project or technical lead on in-house and externally funded projects with respect to performance, process improvement or cost reduction efforts
Develop and conduct test programs to evaluate and/or characterize production conditions, technical requirements and current shipyard materials, processes and welding consumables
Prepare technical reports as a result of testing, and investigations
Conduct quality assurance testing, root cause investigations, and engineering evaluations to support production welding consumables and adjudication of deviations and non-conformances to technical requirements
Responsible for the quality, operability, and suitability of procured welding consumables to operate successfully in the shipyard with consistent weld metal mechanical properties and avoidance of metallurgical or weld quality concerns
Conduct welding consumable manufacturer audits along with Supplier Quality, as necessary
Support production and design efforts through fabrication of production and design mockups to ensure shipyard viability and service performance with respect to mechanical properties and weld quality
Evaluate and/or develop existing and new welding equipment, welding methods, techniques, and procedures
Typical work week – Approximately 30% laboratory observation/evaluation (working alongside developmental welders), 70% analysis, test plan/report writing, solution development and problem adjudication.
Qualifications:
Required:
Bachelor of Science or higher in Engineering
The ability to understand basic principles of welding and destructive and non-destructive testing
Must be capable of reading and interpreting specifications, procedures, drawings and other documents
Internal candidates must be from an organization outside of Operations (Casciano/Gabriel)
Preferred:
Bachelor of Science or higher in Metallurgy/Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Engineering (focus on metals as opposed to non-metallics), Welding Engineering or equivalent engineering field
Experience in an industrial environment, shipbuilding, or other heavy fabrication
Welding Procedure Qualification development and review experience
Mechanical aptitude and hands-on laboratory experience
Familiarity or experience with basic arc welding processes
The ability to analyze problems and to develop and implement solutions
Experience in the support of structural or piping welding applications
Welder training or experience in the field of welding
Project management experience
Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
Basic familiarity with the data analysis and the application of statistics and regression
Familiarity with Military and Commercial Specifications with regards to Welding and Brazing Procedure
Qualification and Fabrication of pipe and structure, Tech Pub 248, Tech Pub 1688, Tech Pub 278, AWS, and ASM
Skills:
Team player, comfortable working and communicating with all levels
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
Ability to write test plans, technical reports and other correspondence
