Quality Assurance Engineer

Groton Connecticut, United States General Dynamics Electric Boat Full time
Overview:
This Systems Engineer position within D322, Quality Assurance Engineering (QAE) requires a highly motivated, self-starter who can operate with minimal supervision and who possess strong interpersonal and communication skills. This role develops and leads cross-functional plans for timely resolution of significant non-conforming conditions (Global Issues). These Global Issues arise from the simultaneous production of VIRGINIA/VPM and COLUMBIA/DREADNOUGHT as well as Major Overhaul Availabilities and Strategic Sourcing efforts.

Responsibilities include leading and or participating in quality investigations that may involve Groton, QP, EB off sites, NNS or received vendor material. For cognizant global issues, candidates will participate in the development of problem statements, sampling plans, bounding actions and root causes. Since emergent issues may originate from any discipline, trade, or supplier QA Engineers are required to become familiar with new subjects and topics in an expedited manner. Significant systems-level analysis and problem solving skills are required to review, critique, and approve bounding actions and ensure risk is mitigated and maximum reasonable assurance achieved.

Candidates are expected to effectively and independently conduct detailed investigations, research technical requirements, interact with various shipyard trades and design and engineering disciplines, and communicate effectively with the customer and EB senior management. To be successful in this role, the candidate will need to have a questioning attitude while working closely with senior technical experts both within the department and the larger SME community (Supplier Quality, NDT/Welding Engineering, Waterfront and Design Engineering, Planning, etc.).

Additional responsibilities within the department may include:

Acting as quality liaison to teaming partner (NNS) for resolution of VIRGINIA Class construction issues between shipyards;

Participation in the evaluation and development of suppliers identified in various VIRIGINIA/UK/CLB/Strategic Sourcing initiatives;

Participation in EB Special Emphasis Program (SUBSAFE/DSS-SOC/FBW SCS) functional and ship certification audits, including audit card resolution;

Directly supporting ship certification events at EB (including off site facilities) and/or NNS;

Participation in Special Emphasis Program (SUBSAFE/DSS-SOC/FBW SCS) working groups within EB and jointly with NNS, and leading selected improvement initiatives.

Qualifications:
Required:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering or a related technical field

Internal candidates must come from organizations outside of Operations (Gildart/Gabriel).

Preferred:

Master’s Degree

Professional Certification (Green Belt, Black Belt)

Professional Licensure (PE License)

Experience in Engineering, Program Office and/or Quality

Skills:
Candidates must demonstrate strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills, have the ability to function independently and work in a multi-discipline team environment. Candidates need to be able to communicate verbally and in writing to all levels of management. Ideal candidate will have experience as an auditor and an understanding of how EB flows down technical requirements.
