Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY

Engages in substantive legal investigative tasks including the management of various investigative operations, programs, and assets.  Professionally represents the District Attorney's Office and maintains confidentiality of investigative assignments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a current Utah State "Law enforcement officer" (U.C.A. §(phone number removed)).

Peace Officer Standards and Training Academy (POST) certification, plus twelve (12) years of experience with a law enforcement agency, of which seven (7) years must have been as a detective; OR a combination of five (5) years of experience as a detective and a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a law enforcement-related field.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must successfully pass an initial criminal background check as well as every two years thereafter and continuously meet the requirements of the Bureau of Criminal Identification (BCI).

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. May be subject to random alcohol and drug testing.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Conducts on-scene criminal and civil investigations and gathers evidence, documents, records, criminal history, and all relevant information. Manages case disposition logs.

Locates and interviews witnesses, victims, and suspects who have information or are involved in a case; serves subpoenas and other legal documents.

Makes arrests, testifies in official proceedings, and transports witnesses.

Responds to the scenes of Officer Involved Critical Incidents (OICI) to participate in independent investigations. Coordinates with involved agency's investigative efforts to gather all pertinent information necessary for screenings and compiles preliminary reports including statements, documents, photographs, video, reports, and other evidentiary material from the involved agency to be presented at screening.

Manages investigative efforts for the Salt Lake County Health Department.

Acts as coordinator in investigations involving outside agencies.

Attends meetings with attorney(s) for case planning, development, and direction.

Manages District Attorney Special Investigations unit operations including wiretaps and other surveillance, internal affairs investigations, multi-agency investigations, and other investigations.

Manages Special Investigations unit resources and assets including polygraph machines, voice stress computer analyzers, and other deception detection devices, and pen registers, wiretaps, and other surveillance devices. Provides expertise and guidance in the techniques and utilization of said devices.

Performs forensic examinations on communication equipment and through audio/video processing and analysis. Instructs, trains, and oversees the implementation of covert electronic surveillance and maintains expertise in current techniques, methodology, and equipment. Receives and maintains evidence.

Professionally represents the District Attorney's Office at trainings, seminars, and other law enforcement meetings.
