Overview

The Electrical Engineer will be responsible for the design, specification, and coordination of protective relaying, metering, and control systems across transmission and substation networks. This role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant system operation by applying sound engineering judgment, industry standards, and technical expertise.

Working as part of a collaborative team, this engineer will contribute to new substation and transmission projects, maintenance initiatives, and system upgrades — helping to strengthen grid performance and support member systems.

Key Responsibilities

  • Engineer and design protective relaying and control schemes for transmission lines, transformers, circuit breakers, and related equipment, including one-line, schematic, and wiring diagrams.
  • Set and coordinate protective relays for transformers, capacitor banks, and transmission systems; perform fault analysis to ensure proper coordination and reliability.
  • Design and implement metering systems for substations and interconnections with other utilities.
  • Maintain and update fault models, perform system studies, and provide data to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Analyze equipment loading, ratings, power factor, voltage regulation, and protection coordination to ensure optimal system performance.
  • Provide technical support to maintenance, operations, and planning teams on relaying, metering, transformers, and breaker applications.
  • Prepare specifications and evaluate equipment proposals for breakers, transformers, regulators, capacitor banks, and other electrical assets.
  • Design and review substation grounding systems, ensuring compliance with ANSI/IEEE Standards 80 and 81 and proper surge protection application.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues for cooperative partners, including grounding, voltage regulation, and transformer loading.
  • Develop operating procedures, support project management functions, and contribute to scheduling, budgeting, and technical studies.
  • Represent the organization on technical committees and mentor junior engineers or students as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems concentration preferred).
  • Experience in power systems, protective relaying, control systems, or substation design within a utility or engineering environment.
  • Working knowledge of AC three-phase systems, protection coordination, and equipment applications.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and other computer-aided design tools.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to work collaboratively across departments.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel periodically for field visits, project meetings, and training.
