Duties/Job Responsibilities:
Pursuant to R.I. General Laws § , Rhode Island Traffic Tribunal (RITT) Security Officers "may exercise all powers of sheriffs, city and town police officers, and constables when the security officers are enforcing the laws of this state, and all rules and regulations of the traffic tribunal."
RITT Security Officers shall maintain an effective court security program, provide security and protection for judges, magistrates, staff, and the general public within the Traffic Tribunal building and upon the lands and buildings owned or occupied or adjacent to the Traffic Tribunal, or when in attendance with a judge or magistrate. The RITT Security Officer will provide courtroom security and assist as required with all courtroom and court functions. Officers may be required to carry and utilize firearms, and\or appropriate tools required to counteract threats and may be required to operate a metal detector and/or other security screening devices. The RITT Security Officer will work to prevent fire, theft and defacement of property, prevent trespassing, loitering, preserve peace and order and make arrests when necessary.
The RITT Security Officer may be required to investigate and make reports regarding incidents occurring in and around the RITT premises and provide and/or procure first aid as required. RITT Security Officers will cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in the enforcement of laws and regulations and in the investigation of or response to incidents.
RITT Security Officers will be responsible for ensuring that all monies collected by the RITT are safeguarded and properly secured or deposited at the close of each session and may be called upon to serve executions, writs, orders, and citations as directed by the court. RITT Security Officers may be required to perform administrative functions as assigned by the Chief Magistrate or Administrator of the Traffic Tribunal including but not limited to courier services, scanning, data entry, or filing. Travel is required.
Required Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalent certification required; bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university preferred. All candidates must have completed a minimum of forty (40) hours of Rhode Island State Police or Rhode Island Municipal Training Academy curriculum.
Candidates should possess a thorough knowledge of RITT court rules, procedures and policies, as well as familiarity with judicial proceedings and court operations; excellent customer service and communication skills needed; the ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for the rights of others.
Experience such as may have been gained through employment in a full-time position requiring the maintenance of law and order and the protection of life and property including the responsibility for the arrest and detention of persons in violation of the law; or a combination of education and experience equivalent to the above education and experience is preferred.
Candidates may be required to qualify with a firearm or may be required to maintain their present qualification with a firearm issued by the department; May be subject to continual training required to maintain an effective court security program.
Candidates must be physically qualified to perform the assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate; must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license and have transportation available to travel to multiple court locations as assigned. No person shall be appointed until they have been evaluated by a certified psychologist and have provided evidence of a satisfactory evaluation indicating the candidate's fitness for the Security Officer position. Evidence or certification of a satisfactory psychological rating obtained in support of employment in a similar law enforcement position may be submitted and accepted at the discretion of the RITT in lieu of a new assessment.
Position is primarily Monday-Friday, 1st Shift, but the position may be subject to Flex Hours.

Also, be advised that a new provision in RI General Law was enacted requiring direct deposit for all employees. Specific to new hires, the law requires that all employees hired after September 30, 2014 participate in direct deposit. Accordingly, any employee hired after this date will be required to participate in the direct deposit system. At the time the employee is hired, the employee shall identify a financial institution that will serve as a personal depository agency for the employee.
