Assistant Controller

Location: Bethesda, Columbia, or Baltimore, MD (Hybrid – 1-2 days per week in-office)
Job Summary:
A real estate nonprofit organization is seeking an Assistant Controller to support accounting operations for its development, asset management, and property management functions. This role will focus on consolidations and multi-entity accounting and reports to the Controller.
Responsibilities:
- Maintain books and records for multiple entities
- Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close
- Prepare consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules
- Coordinate with external auditors
- Prepare schedules for tax filings
- Support accounting for real estate transactions (pre-development, acquisitions, dispositions, consolidations)
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules
- Manage intercompany accounting and reconciliations
- Mentor junior accounting staff
- Ensure compliance with internal controls
- Assist with accounting policy updates and process improvements
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or advanced degree preferred
- 5-7 years of accounting/finance experience (3+ years considered for strong candidates)
- Experience with multi-entity consolidations and GAAP
- Public accounting and real estate/partnership accounting experience preferred
- Advanced Excel skills required, Workday experience a plus
- Strong communication and organizational skills
