General Summary:The Director of Operational Learning provides strategic leadership for a team of highly skilled learning delivery professionals. This role is accountable for driving a culture of continuous improvement within the learning function, leveraging data and analytics to inform decisions, and ensuring operational excellence. The Director will demonstrate exceptional people leadership by guiding, developing, and empowering team members to achieve their full potential.
In partnership with business leaders, this individual will build strong consultative relationships to align learning strategies with organizational objectives. The Director will oversee the design and delivery of impactful learning programs that enhance workforce capability and contribute to the company's overall success. This role serves as a trusted learning business expert, ensuring that all initiatives support long-term growth and performance.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversees the evaluation, improvement, design, and implementation of curriculums that support instructor-led and independent learning experiences.
  • Curates, organizes, and manages learning content and activities for use by learning professionals and employees.
  • Supports Learning Consultants use of learning resources and delivery of exceptional learning experiences.
  • Oversees the analysis, development, delivery, implementation and evaluation of blended learning and performance solutions
  • Leverages classroom instruction, digital learning, and knowledge management (working closely with the content management and digital development teams).
  • Leads and develops a high performing learning delivery team that is focused on exceeding expectations and delivering high-quality solutions which align with and meet strategic business needs.
  • Ensures learning initiatives and priorities are aligned with business goals by working closely with leadership and subject matter experts.
  • Develops and analyzes measurement and metrics for solutions provided, to assure appropriate return on investment, time to proficiency (e.g., Onboarding/New Hire Learning Programs), alignment of learning objectives, effective resource planning etc.
  • Operates as a strong change leader, managing ambiguity and driving others to embrace and adopt to change.
  • Drives the strategy and support for continuous improvement of solutions, ensuring relevancy and value to the learner.
  • Participates in the initial strategy development and/or leads high profile and complex enterprise or cross functional initiatives that could include working with cross-site colleagues and/or key external partners/vendors.
  • Utilize data and analytics to inform decision making processes related to learning programs and understands and applies KPIs and ROI to learning programs.
  • Creates and sustains a high performing work environment that engages team members. Coach and mentors' direct reports and others.
  • Actively participates on department and/or enterprise initiatives, collaborating with management and learning colleagues across the company to encourage best practice sharing/adoption, as well as consistency in approach, as appropriate.
  • Create, support, and maintain an environment of belonging and inclusion with a commitment to ensuring strong diversity of thought and experience within the team. 
  • Ensures that learning curriculum comply with relevant regulations and standards
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

Job Specifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Adult Learning, Instructional Design, Organization Development or similar learning related fields or equivalent related work experience is required.
  • Five years management experience strongly preferred. Proven track record as strong people leader, with coaching, mentoring and management skills.
  • 5-7 years' experience in insurance or business-related environment. Demonstrated understanding of the market/business issues and ability to transfer strategy into measurable business results in influencing business direction.
  • 8-10 years' experience in learning and performance development, adult education, or organizational design. Understands and applies core tenants of learning design/methodology and adult learning principles. Synthesizes good instructional design with alternative delivery methods.
  • Superior track record in managing multiple, concurrent projects, adapting easily to new, different, or changing situations, requirements, or priorities.
  • Excellent judgment and logic to handle sensitive information.
  • Understands key drivers of business brand and vision – aligning solutions to the achievement of business goals.
  • Strategic thinking skills with the ability to plan, implement and achieve short and long-term goals, with a forward-thinking mindset towards innovation.
  • Quickly establishes credibility and collaboration with colleagues based on knowledge, leadership attributes, accomplishments, and a strong work ethic.
  • Adept at leading and developing the competencies of a geographically dispersed team of highly talented consulting, learning and performance professionals, as applicable

The base salary range for applicants for this position is listed below. Unless actual salary is indicated above in the job description, actual pay will be based on skill, geographical location and experience.

$89,900.00-$169,900.00

Additionally, Unum offers a portfolio of benefits and rewards that are competitive and comprehensive including healthcare benefits (health, vision, dental), insurance benefits (short & long-term disability), performance-based incentive plans, paid time off, and a 401(k) retirement plan with an employer match up to 5% and an additional 4.5% contribution whether you contribute to the plan or not.  All benefits are subject to the terms and conditions of individual Plans.
