Museum Events Bartender (Per Diem)

Status: Per Diem, Scheduled based on Museum and event needs, Opportunities for repeat shifts.

Hourly Rate: $25/hour, Tip eligibility varies by event and bar structure

Reports to: Event Coordinator

Position Summary

The Per Diem Bartender supports the museum's public open hours and event programming by providing responsible, efficient, and welcoming bar service. This guest-facing role contributes directly to the visitor experience while maintaining compliance with alcohol service regulations and museum policies.

Bartenders may work during private rentals, public museum events, happy hours, movie nights, lectures, special programming, and regular museum open hours. Shifts are scheduled based on event needs and may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Key Responsibilities

Bar Service & Guest Experience

  • Provide friendly, professional bar service during museum open hours and private events
  • Prepare and serve beer, wine, and select cocktails according to museum bar offerings
  • Engage with guests in a welcoming, knowledgeable, and respectful manner
  • Monitor guest consumption and practice responsible alcohol service at all times

Setup, Breakdown & Operations

  • Assist with bar setup prior to service (stocking, ice, glassware, POS setup, signage)
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked bar area throughout the shift
  • Handle bar breakdown and cleanup at the end of service, including restocking and securing alcohol
  • Report low inventory, damaged items, or maintenance issues to Event Coordinator

Compliance & Safety

  • Check IDs and ensure compliance with state and local alcohol laws
  • Follow museum policies related to alcohol service, cash handling, and guest conduct
  • Maintain awareness of safety concerns in a shared museum/event environment

Collaboration & Professionalism

  • Work collaboratively with museum staff, event coordinators, volunteers, and outside vendors
  • Follow event timelines and service guidelines provided by the museum
  • Represent the museum's mission, values, and professionalism at all times

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of bartending experience in a bar, restaurant, event venue, or comparable hospitality setting
  • Experience serving beer, wine, and cocktails; cocktail experience may vary
  • Experience with experimental or unique cocktails, specialty menus, or collaborative menu creation is a plus
  • Demonstrated knowledge of responsible alcohol service and guest safety
  • Ability to manage multiple guests and service demands in a fast-paced event environment
  • Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable working independently or with a partner while also collaborating with event staff and museum personnel
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 40 lbs
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

Certifications & Requirements

  • Valid alcohol service certification (e.g., TIPS or equivalent), or willingness to obtain prior to first shift (Museum wiling to pay for certification completion)
  • Must meet all state and local age requirements for alcohol service
  • Reliable transportation
  • Ability to follow museum policies, dress code, and professional standards

Work Environment

This role is based in a historic museum and event space. Bartenders may work during public open hours, evening rentals, film screenings, private receptions, and special programs. The environment is fast-paced, guest-focused, and mission-driven.
