Girls on the Grid Line is a pre-apprenticeship and workforce development initiative dedicated to empowering young women to explore and enter high-demand careers in the utility and skilled trades industries. The program provides hands-on technical training, leadership development, and industry exposure to prepare participants for successful entry into registered apprenticeship programs and sustainable utility careers.

Position Summary

The Part-Time Wastewater/Water Instructor is responsible for teaching foundational concepts and applied technical skills related to water treatment, wastewater operations, safety, and environmental stewardship.

The instructor will facilitate classroom and hands-on learning experiences that prepare participants for entry-level roles or further training in water and wastewater utility operations. This position plays a key role in bridging technical education with real-world industry practices, helping participants understand how clean water and infrastructure careers power communities.

Key Responsibilities

Instructional Delivery

  • Develop and deliver engaging lessons on water treatment, wastewater collection systems, safety protocols, and environmental regulations.

  • Introduce participants to key concepts such as:

  • The water cycle and treatment processes

  • Water quality testing and sampling techniques

  • Equipment operation and maintenance fundamentals

  • Safety procedures (PPE, confined space, chemical handling)

  • Regulatory compliance (OSHA basics)

  • Integrate demonstrations, simulations, and practical exercises that connect theory to hands-on learning.

  • Reinforce career readiness skills including teamwork, communication, and problem-solving within a utility context.

  • Adapt instruction for diverse learners and nontraditional students entering technical trades.

Curriculum & Program Coordination

  • Collaborate with the Executive Program Director to align lessons with program goals, pre-apprenticeship standards, and industry certifications.

  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of training materials and lab exercises.

  • Coordinate with industry partners and field experts for site visits, guest speakers, or applied learning experiences.

  • Assist with safety planning and risk assessments for training environments.

Participant Support & Mentorship

  • Provide individualized academic and career guidance to participants exploring utility career pathways.

  • Foster an inclusive, supportive learning environment that encourages curiosity and confidence in technical subjects.

  • Offer constructive feedback and mentoring to help participants meet performance goals and prepare for next steps in their career journey.

Evaluation & Reporting

  • Assess participant progress through quizzes, practical demonstrations, and performance observations.

  • Maintain accurate attendance and progress records.

  • Submit periodic reports to the Executive Program Director regarding outcomes, feedback, and instructional improvements.
