POSITION: Learning Specialist- Long Term Sub
4 days ago
Position Description
Learning Specialists play a central role in differentiation, development of executive functioning skills, and targeted support to students who benefit from small group or one-on-one instruction to either extend or remediate their learning. Learning Specialists instill the skills and competencies in students to help them thrive in a range of school settings. Learning Specialists should be trained in ways to support a broad range of neurodivergent learning profiles. They should also be trained in reading and writing assessment and instructions. Learning Specialists work closely with the homeroom teachers to support curriculum development and instruction.
Learning Specialists will work with students before and after school as well as across the day to ensure each student in meeting their full potential in each subject. Often times Learning Specialists also provide SEL support through their relationships and confidence building for each student.
At St. Patrick's, strong partnerships with families are key to student success. Learning Specialists support Homeroom Teachers to foster open, proactive communication with parents through:
- Presentations at Back-to-School Night and parent events;
- Supporting the Homeroom teacher in Parent-Teacher Conferences and detailed narrative reports each trimester; and
- Sharing regular updates on student progress with the homeroom teacher.
*
- Beyond instruction, Learning Specialists proactively address academic, behavioral, or social challenges, working in partnership with parents and the Head of Lower School and School Counselors to recommend interventions or additional support as needed.
The school day begins with Learning Specialists arriving at 7:45 am to prepare classrooms, plan activities, and connect with colleagues. The day concludes with teachers overseeing carpool at 2:50 pm, assisting students as needed until 3:45 pm. A typical lower school classroom has between 15 and 18 students. See this to better understand the planning periods available to teachers and the typical flow of our six-day rotation.
The ideal candidate for the Learning Specialist position will possess:
- A bachelor's degree in education or a related field (master's degree preferred);
- Three to five years of successful teaching experience;
- A deep understanding of elementary-age child development and diverse learning needs;
- Expertise in reading and mathematics instruction;
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal;
- A collaborative, collegial approach to working with others; and,
- Successful completion of required background checks.
In addition to these qualifications, candidates can learn more about the qualities of a St. Patrick's Educator by looking at our pilot Faculty Competencies Document.
