Position Overview
The Instructional Support Specialist (ISS) at the Young Adult Learning Center will work collaboratively and jointly with all GED classroom teachers, special education teachers, and the Dean of Academics. The Instructional Support Specialist (ISS) will work to support students and the overall learning experience. They help provide the necessary academic enrichment and supplemental assistance to help students thrive and prosper.

Responsibilities
Specific responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
- Assists the teacher by monitoring and supporting instructional and/or other classroom-based activities for students as prompted by an in-person or virtual teacher
- Provides tutoring and supplemental services for all GED subjects
- Serves as a substitute teacher for up to an entire day of instruction or, at minimum, an entire class period
- Assist classrooms by maintaining order and discipline (enforcing the classroom rules and consequences along with upholding school policies and procedures)
- Monitors students in academic and non-academic classrooms and settings
- Monitors students throughout the school day, including in the classroom, hallways, during lunch, and outside school events
- Assist in arrival and departure routines of students attending in-person instruction
- Takes attendance and search for students not in their assigned areas
- Provides crisis prevention and intervention where appropriate
- Maintains a controlled environment for students and staff in the school building and campus
- Participate in Intensive Behavior Intervention staff development in-service training
- Assist with the implementation of behavior management techniques (verbal) used with individuals with special needs.
- Assist students individually or in small groups according to the assessment of the classroom teacher(s)
- Participate in various meetings for the purpose of sharing information regarding student progress and opportunities
- Facilitate YALC boot camps and other academic activities interventions
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in education (preferred) or related field
- Three (3) or more years of teaching or classroom-based teaching experience
- Experience with working with adult learners ages 18 years and older (preferred)
- Extensive knowledge about the official GED exam (preferred)
- Experience in school-based behavior management and/or crisis intervention
- Keen understanding of academic interventions and differentiated learning
Salary and Benefits
Maya Angelou Schools and See Forever Foundation salaries are comparable to those of other public charter schools in the District of Columbia area.
