Job Title: MRI Coil Repair Technician
Department: Biomedical Engineering / Imaging Equipment Service
Reports To: MRI Service Manager or Engineering Supervisor
Location: Tamarac, FL.
Position Summary:
The MRI Coil Repair Technician is responsible for the inspection, testing, troubleshooting, and repair of MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) coils used in diagnostic imaging systems. The technician ensures coils function optimally and safely by performing component-level diagnostics, soldering, reassembly, and testing under OEM and regulatory standards. This role requires attention to fine detail, strong electrical troubleshooting skills, and familiarity with radiofrequency (RF) principles.
Key Responsibilities:
- Inspect, test, and diagnose MRI coil assemblies for faults, damage, or signal degradation.
- Repair or replace defective components including capacitors, wiring, connectors, shielding, and RF circuits.
- Use diagnostic tools such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, and MRI test benches to verify functionality and performance.
- Perform precision soldering, cable splicing, epoxy potting, and RF shielding repairs as needed.
- Calibrate and test coils to ensure compliance with OEM specifications and image quality standards.
- Document repair steps, materials used, and test results in compliance with FDA and ISO guidelines.
- Collaborate with engineers, quality control, and MRI field service teams to troubleshoot recurring issues.
- Maintain a clean, ESD-safe, and magnet-safe work environment.
- Stay updated on technical service bulletins, coil model changes, and safety procedures.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
- Associate degree or certification in Electronics Technology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field required.
- 2+ years of hands-on experience repairing MRI coils or similar RF/electronic medical equipment preferred.
Technical Skills:
- Solid understanding of RF electronics, impedance matching, and signal integrity.
- Skilled in fine-pitch soldering, component rework, and cable/connector repair.
- Proficient in reading schematics, wiring diagrams, and service manuals.
- Familiarity with MRI safety protocols, magnetic field risks, and cleanroom procedures.
Soft Skills:
- Strong attention to detail and manual dexterity.
- Excellent problem-solving and documentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet strict quality and compliance standards.
Working Conditions:
- Work is primarily performed in a lab or repair shop environment.
- May require travel to customer sites or MRI facilities.
- Requires handling of small components, use of ESD-safe tools, and working in proximity to MRI systems (non-ferromagnetic tools required).
- Some lifting of coil assemblies up to 30 lbs.
