Our School Advocacy Coordinators creates a welcoming, engaging environment for patients and families. Eagerly seeks information, draws thoughtful insights, and adapts quickly to support changing needs, staying calm and positive in dynamic situations. Communicates clearly, asks clarifying questions, and shares insights with confidence. Plans and organizes work with care, holding high standards and showing initiative. Prioritizes patient and family needs through attentive listening and thoughtful follow-up, always aiming to enhance their experience.

Serves as a liaison to school system personnel in order to advocate for the educational needs of patients. Confers with students, parents, and school counselors to resolve academic problems. Collaborates with St. Jude personnel including clinical staff and staff from Psychology, Rehabilitation Services and Social Work to understand each patient's needs and recommendations for the classroom setting. Attends Individual Educational Plan and 504 Plan meetings for patients in person or through conference calls. Provides education and anticipatory guidance to families and patients regarding late effects and the laws that protect students that require assistance in school. Actively participates in staff meetings, workshops, and professional learning to stay at the forefront of education.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate day-to-day operations of educational programming
  • Prepare learning objectives, pacing guides or consultation according to national, state, local or professional standards.
  • Deliver educational or consultative programming in formal or informal learning environments using developmentally appropriate teaching methods.
  • Adapts lesson plans, supports/plan of care or activities to meet the individual needs, acuity and/or interests of participants.
  • Assess student learning and/or functioning using validated tools and measures.
  • Facilitate interactive, engaging learning experiences and/or school support
  • Manage classroom or program logistics, such as scheduling and materials preparation.
  • Collect, organize, and report program data to program leadership.
  • Provide input on program improvement based on observations and participant feedback.
  • Communicate with program participants, students, community schools and/or caregivers regarding program logistics.
  • Participate in staff and professional meetings, educational conferences, and teacher training workshops to improve practice.
  • Represent St. Jude in meetings with external partners (e.g., schools, professional organizations, school board meetings).
  • Builds relationships with educators, schools, or community partners to promote programs, student success and achieve the goals of the department.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or directed to meet the goals and objectives of the department and the institution.
  • Maintain regular attendance.

Minimum Education and/or Training:

  • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited institution in one of the following - Education, Special Education, School Counseling, School Psychology or Social Work is required.
  • Master's degree preferred.

Minimum Experience:

  • Three (3) years of instruction experience, experience as a school psychologist, school social worker teaching and developing educational programs for students with disabilities or experience as a professional educational advocate for children with disabilities is required.
  • Experience working with/writing IEPs and 504 Plans is strongly preferred.
  • Experience advocating for students with special needs is preferred.
  • Additional training in specialized area (e.g., Special Education, STEMM) as required by the program preferred.
  • Fluency in additional languages strongly encouraged.
  • Proven performance in earlier role.

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by Law:

  • None

Licensure, Registration and/or Certification Required by SJCRH Only:

  • Driver License (DLD Reside) Must have a valid driver's license from the employee's state of residence
  • Auto Insurance Policy - Must have a valid personal insurance policy on the vehicle which meets the requirements for the state of Tennessee
  • Educator License - within the United States required. Must transfer license to the state of Tennessee within 12 months of employment.
  • Certified School Social Work Specialist - National Association of Social Workers preferred.
  • Licensed Master Social Worker from the Tennessee Board of Social Workers preferred.

  • Works with partners in their function to find the best solutions that align with functional priorities. Works effectively to find solutions.
  • Leverages knowledge of concepts & approaches in school arts area to communicate/ implement the steps of EBP including constructing an EBP question and conducting literature searches for best practices.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of distinction between evidence-based/ evidence-informed practice and experience-based practice.
  • Has working knowledge of project management and planning tools.
  • Is able to effectively sequence and prioritize tasks within programs in psychosocial services area and works more independently to manage day to day issues, escalating as needed.
  • Understands the overall program goals & patient/ team needs, coordinates with cross functional teams.
  • Understands the task at hand, seeks out information, and draws conclusions from available data to deliver outcomes.
  • Adapts quickly to changing priorities to perform as needed in his/her role.
  • Remains calm when faced with changes to (and in) his/her work.
  • Effectively acknowledges and responds to patient queries and requests with compassion and attention as appropriate.
  • Consistently engages with patients, families, and care teams to facilitate optimal solutions for patient needs as appropriate.
  • Escalates/ redirects effectively for effective and efficient care with a focus on overall patient priorities as appropriate.

Compensation
In recognition of certain U.S. state and municipal pay transparency laws, St. Jude is including a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This is an estimate offered in good faith and a specific salary offer takes into account factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets, experience and training, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the salary range and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case. A reasonable estimate of the current salary range is $60,320 - $105,040 per year for the role of School Advocacy Coordinator.
