POSITION SUMMARY
The Grants Manager plays a key role in advancing Heart of LA's mission by securing institutional funding and cultivating meaningful relationships with funders. Serving as an expert on Heart of LA's programs, the Grants Manager communicates with authenticity and passion for the organization's values, goals, and impact. This position is responsible for leading the development, writing, and submission of compelling letters of inquiry, proposals, reports, and donor communications that accurately reflect program outcomes and meet funder requirements.
The Grants Manager manages relationships with assigned funders, supports renewal processes, and helps identify and pursue new institutional and government funding opportunities through targeted research and calendar integration. They collaborate closely with the finance team to develop accurate proposal budgets, ensure compliance, and prepare materials for funder site visits, workshops, and events.
This position is ideal for a detail-oriented, strategic communicator who is motivated to secure resources that expand Heart of LA's ability to transform lives through academic, art, music, and athletic programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as an "expert" on Heart of LA's programs who can write, speak and communicate with authenticity and passion for HOLA's mission, values, programs, and goals.
- Lead in the development, writing, and submission of compelling LOIs and proposals.
- Write grant proposals and reports, accurately and effectively meeting funder requirements, deadlines, and specifications.
- Manage relationships with assigned funders and initiate ideas for relationship development and growth gifts.
- Assist the Senior Manager of Institutional Giving with tracking current grant cycles and renewal processes to ensure continued funding.
- Conduct targeted research and identify new institutional and government funders and help grow the existing portfolio of funders; integrate the corresponding timeline/deadlines into the grants department's calendar and workload.
- Liaise with funders and prepare the development/executive/program team for and participate in site visits, etc. as requested.
- Attend RFP sessions, workshops, etc.
- Develop proposal and project budgets as required by funders with the support of the finance team, and collaborate with Heart of LA's finance department to ensure grant compliance.
- Write donor correspondence, including solicitation letters and reports.
- Support with administrative tasks (drafting acknowledgment letters, preparing mailings, updating online profiles, etc.).
- Attend development department meetings and other Heart of LA meetings and events in person as needed.
- Collaborate on special events to generate funds as a part of the Development Team.
- Assist department leadership in other tasks as needed.
- May perform other departmental duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS)
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or equivalent experience required.
- 1-3 years of experience in grant writing/management in the education sector preferred.
- Persuasive or argumentative writing experience required, prior grant writing/development experience strongly preferred.
- Strong administrative skills and practices.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
- Analytical, quantitative and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently with a high degree of reliability, accuracy, good judgment and productivity.
- Skilled in managing internal and external relationships to support proposal development, compliance and implementation.
- Proficient computer skills required.
- Ability and willingness to work occasional overtime to meet deadlines as needed.
- Commitment to the organizational mission and sensitivity to the needs of underserved youth.
- Must pass a DOJ background check.

I understand and agree that my employment with Heart of Los Angeles is at-will, and can be terminated with or without cause or notice by either Heart of Los Angeles or myself. I also understand that no supervisor or any employee of Heart of Los Angeles has the authority to enter into any agreement for employment for any specified period of time or to make any agreement contrary to the at-will relationship described above. The at-will relationship will remain in effect throughout my employment with Heart of Los Angeles.
