The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a significant renovation project on its campus (called Base Camp), which will be completed in 2026. The public-facing portion of this renovation will be the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration. Components of the new museum will include a state-of-the-art pavilion entrance, auditorium, iconic photo gallery, exhibition space, immersive walk-through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, and exciting new event space. The capstone of the renovation is a one-of-a-kind nighttime experience in the courtyard.

Job Profile Summary

The Safety Technician will work closely with the Director of Security, Health & Safety to ensure a safe and healthy working environment for staff, tenants, and visitors. This role involves evaluating and mitigating workplace hazards, maintaining regulatory compliance, and supporting a culture of safety through inspections, training, and incident response. The Safety Technician also assists with implementing safety programs and maintaining documentation related to workplace safety, equipment usage, and hazardous materials.

Your Impact

Your Impact Responsibilities Include

  • Conduct safety audits, inspections, and job hazard analyses (JHAs) across facilities; identify risks and make actionable recommendations to correct or mitigate hazards. Prepare reports and track findings until resolution. (30%)

  • Manage and maintain the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) inventory system. Ensure all chemical-using departments maintain current SDS logs and that staff are trained in accessing and interpreting them. (20%)

  • Oversee compliance with safety standards related to equipment use (e.g., aerial lifts, forklifts, pallet jacks). Coordinate preventive maintenance, evaluate safe practices, and ensure operators are properly trained and certified. (15%)

  • Support and coordinate OSHA-required training, including Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, PPE, and Fire Safety. Provide safety training to employees and management on a regular basis. (15%)

  • Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root causes and assist with development of corrective action plans. Participate in incident reviews and recommend preventive measures. (10%)

  • Maintain safety records, inspections, and incident reports in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements. (10%)

Minimum Education Required

Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety or a related field preferred.

Candidates will also be required to have or acquire the following certifications: 

  • IATA (International Air), 

  • IMDG (International Maritime), 

  • DOT 49CFR (US Domestic), 

  • Radioactive and IATA Lithium Batteries. 

  • OSHA 1910 general industry and OSHA 1926 construction.

  • First Aid/CPR/AED (American Red Cross or equivalent)

  • The following certifications are strongly preferred:

    OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry or Construction)

  • Occupational Health & Safety Technician (OHST) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP)

Minimum Years and Type of Experience

  • Minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in workplace safety, environmental health and safety (EHS), or a related field.

  • Experience supporting OSHA compliance and safety program implementation strongly preferred.

  • Experience conducting safety inspections, hazard assessments, and coordinating or delivering employee safety training.

  • Familiarity with maintaining SDS records, investigating incidents, and developing corrective action plans.

Necessary Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and regulations (1910, 1926)

  • Ability to conduct safety audits, write incident reports, and deliver safety training

  • Ability to develop and support safety programs

  • Familiarity with SDS systems and chemical safety requirements

  • Experience with safety inspection tools or reporting systems

  • Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to take ownership of responsibilities.

  • Must act with integrity and honesty, be self-motivated, and work well both independently and in team settings.

Salary Information

The National Geographic Society offers a competitive and holistic total rewards package. Our compensation structure and transparent pay philosophy are based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations.

The salary range for this position accounts for a wide range of factors including but not limited to organizational need; specific skill sets; experience and training; certifications; and more. At the National Geographic Society, individuals are typically hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role, and compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case.

The hourly range for this position is $64, $68,000.00.

Job Designation

Resident - Our Resident category recognizes that certain staff need to be physically present at Base Camp to do their work. Some Resident staff must be at Base Camp every day to do their jobs, while others may only need to be physically present onsite some of the time to meet looming deadlines or to get work done and may require a unique schedule. As such, this category has been revised to provide maximum flexibility depending on what's required for each individual role. The days Resident staff come into the office will be determined by their teams and workflow, and they should work with their supervisors to determine their specific schedule. And throughout the year, their schedule may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles, deadlines, and/or ebbs and flows of work.
