Manufacturing Costing and Inventory Accountant

Location: Onsite

Reports to: VP of Finance

People Managed: None

A day in the role

You start your morning reviewing standard cost reports and inventory levels, spotting variances before they ripple through the P&L. Midday, you partner with Operations and Supply Chain to confirm material costs and production inputs, ensuring budgets and forecasts reflect reality. As the day closes, you post precise journal entries, reconcile accounts, and prepare management-ready insights that inform pricing, ROI, and inventory strategy.

What you'll do
  • Collect, analyze, and report cost accounting data; prepare standard cost reports, cost comparisons, and product cost analyses.
  • Monitor inventory levels and participate in physical counts to keep records accurate and complete.
  • Track and explain manufacturing variances; reconcile and post journal entries for month-end close.
  • Ensure all manufacturing costs and inventory are recorded accurately and in compliance with US GAAP.
  • Assess fixed and variable components to determine full product manufacturing cost.
  • Establish and maintain standard costs for products and services.
  • Analyze labor and overhead rates; monitor accumulation of direct labor, overhead, and other manufacturing expenses.
  • Prepare monthly and quarterly reports based on inventory analysis and standard-to-actual cost comparisons.
  • Research material costs to maintain accuracy within the ERP/accounting systems.
  • Prepare budget reports by gathering inputs across departments; collaborate to support accurate budgeting and forecasting.
  • Investigate discrepancies in financial records; perform reconciliations and support internal and external audits.
  • Review inventory and recommend adjustments for obsolete or excess stock.
  • Contribute across the finance team as needed; submit clear and timely reports to management.

What you bring
  • Thorough understanding of GAAP and accurate expense classification.
  • Analytical, data-driven decision-making with strong critical thinking.
  • Clear communication and presentation skills for stakeholders at all levels.
  • Advanced desktop skills: Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and the broader MS Office suite.
  • Hands-on experience with accounting/ERP platforms; NetSuite and Syteline are a plus.
  • GAAP fluency; CPA or other relevant certification is a plus.
  • Facility with mathematics, statistics, and cost analysis techniques; passion for working with large datasets.
  • Team-oriented with a 'can do' mindset; able to work independently when needed.
  • Highly organized, calm under pressure, and effective with tight deadlines.
Education and experience
  • Bachelor's degree in finance with an accounting major.
  • 5+ years of accounting experience in a manufacturing environment.
