About the Role:
The Senior Development Accountant plays a critical role in managing and overseeing the financial activities related to development projects within the organization. This position ensures accurate financial reporting, budgeting, and compliance with regulatory requirements, supporting the strategic growth and sustainability of development initiatives. The role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to analyze financial data, optimize resource allocation, and provide insights that drive informed decision-making. The Senior Development Accountant will also be responsible for maintaining internal controls and supporting audit processes to safeguard organizational assets. Ultimately, this position contributes to the financial integrity and success of development programs by delivering timely and precise financial information.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of professional accounting experience, preferably in nonprofit or development sectors.
- Strong knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and fund accounting.
- Proficiency in accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or equivalent certification.
- Experience with grant management and donor reporting requirements.
- Familiarity with nonprofit financial regulations and compliance standards.
- Experience using enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems such as NetSuite or similar.
- Advanced skills in data analysis and financial modeling.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements and reports related to development projects to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.
- Manage budgeting processes for development initiatives, including forecasting, monitoring expenditures, and variance analysis.
- Collaborate with program managers and other stakeholders to provide financial insights and support strategic planning.
- Ensure compliance with internal policies, donor requirements, and regulatory standards through diligent record-keeping and reporting.
- Support internal and external audit activities by preparing documentation and responding to inquiries.
- Maintain and improve internal controls related to development accounting processes.
- Reconcile accounts, process journal entries, and manage grant and fund accounting activities.
- Assist in the development and implementation of financial systems and procedures to enhance efficiency and accuracy.

The Senior Development Accountant utilizes strong analytical and organizational skills daily to manage complex financial data and ensure accuracy in reporting. Proficiency in accounting software and Excel enables efficient processing of transactions, budgeting, and financial analysis. Communication skills are essential for collaborating with program teams and explaining financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders. Attention to detail and a thorough understanding of accounting principles ensure compliance and support audit readiness. Additionally, problem-solving skills help identify process improvements and resolve discrepancies, contributing to the overall financial health of development projects.
