Job Description
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan (BCBSM) has a Data Analyst II opportunity available within our Data Strategy/Solution Design team.

About The Role

  • Assists in the development of data standards, policies and procedures
  • Support in the development of short- and long-term solutions of information architecture strategies
  • Work with IT teams to ensure compliance. Perform regular audits of data
  • Collaborate with data architects to design the common customer view of information. Support creation and implementation of detailed specifications for various IT projects / solutions. Document and maintain all data definitions, data sources, business meaning and usage of information. Participate in development of single source data strategy. Understand internal and external data sources for new data and better sources of data feeds.
  • Understand the framework for representing the data elements including the entities, relationships and attributes.
  • Understand solutions and recommendations for improving data integrity issues.
  • Follow data profiling and preventative procedures to improve data quality. Create data quality metrics for identifying data related issues. Collaborate with multiple teams to establish appropriate data access management.
  • Ensure technical documentation is developed and maintained.

Departmental Preferences

  • Experience analyzing complex data sets with SQL
  • Previous experience/knowledge of health care data domains

Develop medium to highly complex logical database designs, logical data models and relational data definitions in support of corporate and customer information systems requirements. Work closely with customers, vendors, business analysts and application development project teams to resolve information flow and content issues. Work on multiple large complex projects/issues/enhancements as a team member or lead.

  • Provide input in support of the strategic planning process and short and long term planning. Assist in establishing and maintaining standards for data quality and the development of data standards, policies and procedures. Work with IT teams to ensure compliance. Act as a gatekeeper for new data that do not meet the set business requirements.
  • Gather and document the data needs of the organization. Work with business and vendor partners, and project delivery leads to gather reporting requirements. Interpret and document the data needs for the business.
  • Collect, analyze and summarize data to support business decisions. Design reports to identify patterns and trends. Design, develop and deploy query parameters, layout, filters, and analytics for program information solutions. Ensure that the information is named properly and defined consistently across the organization. Provide data that is congruent and reliable and is easily accessible by the user. Identify opportunities for reuse of data across the enterprise. Validate data sources. Assist with management of all metadata associated with individual models. Manage the flow of information between departments.
  • Translate business requirements into conceptual, logical and physical data model. Develop and maintain an integrated logical and physical data model. Assist in creating a framework for representing the data elements including the entities, relationships and attributes. Recognize and resolve conflicts between models, ensuring that data models are consistent with the enterprise model (e.g., entity names, relationships and definitions). Work closely with other IT groups to use the data models throughout the whole life cycle.
  • Ensure and maintain a high level of data integrity by using tools to monitor and mass update data changes. Develop data profiling and preventative procedures to improve data quality. Monitor and resolve daily exception reports. Analyze data inaccuracies and recommend process improvements or system changes to enhance overall quality of the data. Communicate data integrity accuracy to the business, and escalates/communicates issues when necessary. Identify opportunities and support the development of automated solutions to enhance the quality of enterprise data. Analyze data issues and work with development teams for problem resolutions. Monitor data dictionary statistics, analyze reports of data duplicates or other errors to provide ongoing appropriate data reports. Identify problematic areas and conduct research to determine the best course of action to correct the data, identify, analyze and interpret trends and patterns in complex datasets.
  • Research and resolve production problems/system abends.
  • Assist with creating data quality metrics for identifying data related issues. Test and produce metrics and samples for further analysis. Identify opportunities for process improvements. Support the development of automated solutions that will enhance the quality of enterprise data. Develop and maintain technical documentation about the data.
  • Assist in the coaching and training of customers in the use of business intelligence tools to enhance business decision-making capability.

Education And/Or Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in related field preferred.
  • Three (3) years IT work experience in data modeling, data analysis, relational DBMS design and support and relevant computing environment required.

  • Understand the methodologies and technologies that depict the flow of data within and between technology systems and business functions/operations.
