Senior Manager, Mainframe

Physicians Mutual is seeking an experienced Senior Manager to lead our Mainframe team within the Enterprise Technology Group (ETG). This position ensures the continuous availability, performance, and modernization of our mainframe environment, which supports the Company's core systems and business operations.
Reporting to the Vice President – ETG, the Senior Manager will provide leadership in system design, vendor management, capacity planning, and strategic technology direction.
Responsibilities
- Provide 24/7 operational management of all mainframe systems, ensuring availability, reliability, and recoverability.
- Develop and execute strategies for mainframe capacity planning, system tuning, and security administration.
- Lead and mentor a team of mainframe professionals and coordinate with managed service provider (MSP) vendors.
- Plan and manage technology upgrades, vendor contracts, and modernization initiatives.
- Oversee integration of mainframe technologies with distributed and cloud systems.
- Develop business continuity and disaster recovery plans and test them regularly.
- Manage departmental budgets, resources, and performance goals.
- Partner with leadership across departments to align mainframe strategy with enterprise objectives.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Management Information Systems (MIS) or related field, or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 5–7 years of technology management experience.
- Advanced knowledge of mainframe systems and subsystems (MVS, CICS, DB2) and communication protocols (VTAM, TCP/IP).
- Experience with Windows and Cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity, threat detection, and disaster recovery processes.
- Proven experience managing vendors and technology projects.
- Strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills.
