Principal Backend Engineer (Platform Engineering Team)

Level: Staff+ / Principal

Location: Onsite – San Francisco

Our client, a high-growth fintech company operating at the intersection of blockchain and next-generation financial infrastructure, is seeking a Backend Engineer (Platform) to design and scale the systems and infrastructure that power their core financial services.

This is a senior, hands-on engineering role centered on building and optimizing backend foundations using Python and AWS. You will collaborate closely with infrastructure, DevOps, product, and security teams to set backend engineering standards, elevate performance, and drive architecture for global-scale financial products.

Key Responsibilities for the Principal Backend Engineer

  • Lead the design and evolution of the backend platform supporting all product lines.
  • Architect and implement robust, scalable systems using Python and AWS services including Lambda, ECS/Fargate, DynamoDB, and RDS.
  • Develop frameworks and reusable service components that enable rapid product delivery.
  • Partner with infrastructure and DevOps teams to streamline CI/CD pipelines, observability, and deployment on AWS.
  • Drive system performance tuning, cost optimization, and reliability improvements.
  • Establish strong engineering practices around testing, fault tolerance, and operational excellence.

Ideal Profile for the Principal Backend Engineer

  • 6+ years of backend engineering experience, preferably in fintech, payments, or Web3 environments.
  • Deep expertise in Python and experience with modern microservice frameworks such as FastAPI or Django.
  • Proven ability to architect and maintain distributed systems deployed on AWS.
  • Strong understanding of databases (PostgreSQL, DynamoDB) and event-driven architectures with tools such as SQS, SNS, or Kafka.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code practices using Terraform or AWS CDK.
  • Excellent communication skills and a passion for building scalable, maintainable backend systems.
