KEY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Director of Curriculum and Instruction (DCI) is the leader of coaching for the teachers at their school site. They are responsible for coaching and managing people in order to achieve excellent academic outcomes for all students. The DCI role supports our belief in the human condition, that every human being strives to be fully known for who they are and the unique contribution they make to the human story. In addition to this, the DCI, in partnership with the School Leadership Team, is responsible for the school's results.
The DCI is the coach and manager of 12-15 teachers, but may vary by campus and need.
Leadership

- Coach & develop staff members to achieve excellent academic outcomes for students.
- Lead consistent, high-quality coaching in alignment with DSST's coaching vision
Curriculum
- Work with teachers to effectively plan ahead for their year-long course(s) by applying and refining DSST's course pacing calendars, unit plans, and daily lesson materials—all of which correspond to college readiness standards, research-based instructional practices, and the benchmark assessment program.
- Develop teachers to effectively implement DSST curriculum
- Facilitate Lesson Internalization Coaching Meetings - to develop teachers on their instructional practice within the context of their curriculum and the most essential daily learning.
Instruction
- Regularly observe (at least weekly) and evaluate the classroom practice for those you coach & manage, in alignment with DSST's Essentials for Effective Teaching Rubric.
- Use of DSST's centralized coaching tools to track all coaching meetings, observations, and action steps
- Maintain an awareness of how course content will prepare a student for the needs of a high school college preparatory program
- Facilitate Practice Clinics & Real Time Coaching in order to urgently develop teacher instructional practice.
Assessment
- Create, maintain, and update whole-school, grade-level, and teacher-level student academic and assessment records and reports.
- Lead the execution of the school's assessment program, including testing schedules, required staff training, and upholding district and state requirements.
Data
- Develop teachers in their regular analysis and action planning in response to assessment data.
- Monitor overall school data and progress to goals.
- Manage school and staff member decisions that come from data analysis
Professional Learning
- Develop and execute the Professional Learning vision for your school. Lead professional development that is objective-aligned, engaging, and grounded in adult learning theory.
- Identify and arrange for staff development opportunities which relate to core instructional practices, standards-based assessments, and content areas
- Manage and execute staff meetings
- Manage and execute Professional Learning Days
Additional Duties
- Build relationships with teachers and other members of the administration team in order to positively impact school culture and results
- Co-manage department chairs to ensure effective outcomes within departments
- Recruit and hire school faculty
- Serve as a recruiter for new students; actively engage prospective families in an effort to draw more students to choose your school; be willing to take on additional tasks to support recruitment, as needed
- Work with DSST Home Office to create network-wide standards, curriculum, and assessment documents
- Work with DSST Home Office to create network-wide new teacher professional development; create school-specific new and returning teacher professional development
- Serve as a core member of the Instructional Leadership Team at your school
- Participate in DSST's Instructional Leadership Development program
- If applicable, teach course(s) within the school
- If applicable, act as a student advisor for a group of students
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's Degree required
- At least 3 years 6th-12th grade teaching experience required
- Demonstrated ability to coach, manage and lead adults to successful outcomes
- An unwavering belief that all students can succeed in high school, reach their most ambitious post-secondary goals, and lead exemplary lives
- Desire to grow personally and professionally in their practice of becoming an anti-racist educator
- Self-awareness, a regular practice of reflection, and a desire to continuously improve
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Proven commitment to and experience with serving students of color, students with disabilities, and/or multilingual students
