Must Have Technical / Functional skills:
We are seeking a skilled Technical Data Steward to support enterprise data governance and metadata management
initiatives within the Alation Data Platform. The successful candidate will ensure the accuracy, completeness,
and traceability of metadata and data lineage across diverse data environments. This role bridges technical and
business domains, working closely with data owners, analysts, and business data stewards to promote transparency
accountability and consistent data usage across the organization
- Hands-on experience with Alation or similar metadata management tools.
- Strong SQL skills (MSSQL, Oracle, or similar platforms).
- Experience with data lineage tracing, ETL processes, and enterprise data integration concepts.
- Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills; ability to translate
- technical data issues into clear business language.
- Solid understanding of relational database structures, schemas, and data models.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Metadata Management:
- Manage data lineage documentation from ingestion through transformation and consumption.
- Improve training documentation to assist Alation users with creating/maintaining lineage
Data Lineage & ETL Tracking:
- Trace data flows across multiple systems, including databases, ETL tools (e.g., Informatica, Talend, scripting tools like SAS), data warehouses, and analytics platforms.
- Collaborate with business data stewards to map Critical Data Elements (CDEs) — from the column level—to their authoritative sources.
- Document technical relationships between data sources, transformations, and outputs.
- Analytics & Reporting:
- Write and optimize SQL queries to support Alation Analytics dashboards and reports, lineage validation, and data usage metrics.
- Provide insights on data lineage completeness, quality, and catalog adoption trends. Collaboration & Relationship Management:
- Partner with business data stewards and data owners to document source-to-target mappings, ensure lineage accuracy and align metadata standards.
- Build and maintain strong cross-functional relationships to encourage data sharing and consistent stewardship practices.
- Communicate technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders through written documentation and visual models. Technical Stewardship:
- Understand how data traverses through various database technologies (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, Hive, DB2, etc.). Support documentation of data storage locations, data movement, and transformation logic. o Participate in governance forums to enforce data quality, metadata standards, and stewardship best practices.
Preferred Qualifications
- Familiarity with Informatica PowerCenter, Talend, Tableau, Power BI, Hive, or DB2.
- Experience developing or supporting metadata-driven analytics or data governance dashboards.
- Prior experience collaborating within a federated data stewardship model across technical
