The Financial Control Division within the Department of Finance and Administration is the state's financial oversight body.
Why does the job exist?
The Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) is seeking a Mobile Chief Financial Officer (CFO), a dynamic, senior-level accountant who thrives on solving complex challenges and strengthening financial operations across New Mexico. In this unique statewide role, you will serve as DFA's lead financial oversight, training, and advisory expert to more than 130 state agencies, boards, commissions, and higher education institutions. Acting as a roving CFO, you will provide hands-on support, guidance, and leadership to agencies experiencing high-risk financial conditions, turnover, or special project needs.
How does it get done?
Provide executive-level accounting leadership to state agencies, including temporary CFO assignments during critical transitions.
Design and coordinate statewide financial reporting, risk-mitigation strategies, and process improvements that strengthen transparency and fiscal accountability.
Lead training and outreach efforts to enhance agency financial capacity and compliance with state and federal laws.
Serve as a subject-matter expert in the configuration and optimization of New Mexico¿s enterprise financial systems (ERP/SHARE).
Collaborate with agency leadership, auditors, and policy makers to modernize financial practices across the state.

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Business Administration and three (3) years of experience in accounting, auditing, finance, budgeting, public accounting, and conducting financial audits to include a minimum of two (2) years preparing Comprehensive Annual Financial Reports or equivalent experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Pre-employment criminal background check is required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Working conditions include, but not limited to: Work is performed in an office setting. Frequent late hours, weekends, on-call and callback work may be required related to end-of-year financial reporting cycles. Travel may be required. Incumbent will frequently work under time constraints and is expected to maintain the highest level of professional conduct, ethics and confidentiality. Exposure to VDT's, CRT's or UV rays.
