Director of Pickleball / Director of Operations – Professional Overview

The Director of Pickleball is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the full operational, instructional, and strategic direction of a pickleball facility. This position integrates high-level management, program development, coaching expertise, and customer experience leadership to ensure the facility delivers exceptional service, maintains operational excellence, and fosters a vibrant, inclusive pickleball community.

Role & Key Responsibilities

1. Program & Player Development

  • Design, implement, and manage a comprehensive schedule of leagues, tournaments, clinics, junior programs, open play formats, and special events for diverse age groups and skill levels.
  • Develop pathways for player progression, ensuring programs support beginner onboarding, intermediate advancement, and competitive-level training.
  • Maintain a consistent annual programming calendar aligned with facility goals and membership needs.

2. Coaching, Instruction & On-Court Leadership

  • Deliver 15–20 hours per week of high-quality instruction through private lessons, group clinics, camps, corporate events, and specialty sessions.
  • Provide structured coaching methodologies focused on player development, safety, and long-term engagement.
  • Observe and evaluate player needs, adapting programming and coaching techniques accordingly.

3. Staff Leadership & Workforce Management

  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise coaches, instructors, front-desk personnel, court monitors, and event staff.
  • Conduct regular staff performance evaluations, provide ongoing development, and ensure alignment with facility standards.
  • Create and implement staff scheduling, policies, and professional conduct expectations.

4. Operations, Logistics & Facility Management

  • Oversee daily facility operations, including:
  • Court scheduling, utilization strategy, and reservation management
  • Program registration and customer service standards
  • Facility cleanliness, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols
  • Coordination with pro shop, food & beverage, and membership services
  • Manage operational budgets, revenue forecasting, expense control, and program profitability.
  • Maintain compliance with facility policies, risk management procedures, and industry best practices.

5. Membership, Customer Experience & Community Engagement

  • Build strong relationships with members, guests, and local pickleball communities to enhance loyalty and participation.
  • Develop initiatives that promote an inclusive, welcoming, and engaged environment both on and off the court.
  • Collaborate with marketing and communications teams to promote programs through newsletters, social media, on-site signage, and external partnerships.
  • Represent the facility at tournaments, community events, and regional pickleball activities to strengthen brand presence.

Qualifications & CompetenciesPickleball Experience & Certifications

  • Advanced-level pickleball player (4.5+ rating preferred) with substantial competitive and recreational background.
  • Professional coaching certifications such as:
  • Professional Pickleball Registry (PPR)
  • International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association (IPTPA)
  • Or equivalent recognized training credentials.

Leadership & Management Expertise

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience managing sports or recreational programs, teams, or club operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, motivate, and develop staff in a high-volume, customer-centered environment.
  • Experience navigating member relations, conflict management, and interpersonal communication.

Operational & Administrative Proficiency

  • Strong competency in:
  • Court scheduling and reservation systems
  • Budgeting and financial tracking
  • Event and tournament planning
  • Data reporting and performance analysis
  • Proficiency with office software (Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, CRM systems).

Communication & Organizational Skills

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with players, staff, and community partners.
  • Outstanding organizational abilities, attention to detail, and capability to manage multiple programs and priorities simultaneously.
  • Professional judgment in resolving operational issues, member concerns, and staff challenges.
