Director, Engineering

JOB SUMMARY: The Director of Engineering provides strategic leadership and oversight for the hospitals' engineering/plant operations, ensuring the successful planning, design, and execution of projects that support Burkes objectives. This role is responsible for managing wheelchair maintenance, engineering and plant maintenance, fostering innovation, and maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and compliance. The Director of Engineering collaborates with executive leadership, project managers, and cross-functional departments to align engineering initiatives with organizational goals. This position requires a results-driven leader with strong technical expertise, excellent communication skills, and the ability to build and mentor high-performing teams while driving efficiency and continuous improvement across all engineering functions.
WORK PERFORMED:
- Direct, manage, and develop the engineering and facilities team to deliver high-quality, cost-effective services.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for facility maintenance, capital projects, and sustainability initiatives aligned with hospital goals.
- Collaborate with executive leadership, clinical departments, and external partners to ensure facilities support optimal patient care delivery.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations, including The Joint Commission, Department of Health, CMS, OSHA, NFPA, EPA, and other governing agencies.
- Maintain readiness for regulatory inspections, surveys, and audits at all times.
- Oversee documentation, policies and procedures related to life safety, environment of care, utilities management and infection control.
- Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement strategies to address compliance gaps.
- Oversee preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance programs for all hospital systems, including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, medical gas, and life safety systems.
- Ensure reliable operation of critical infrastructure supporting patient safety and clinical care.
- Monitor and manage energy usage, utility costs, and environmental sustainability initiatives.
- Develop and manage operational and capital budgets, ensuring projects are delivered on time and within budget.
- Lead hospital-wide programs related to fire safety and life safety.
- Coordinate with infection prevention, clinical engineering, and environmental services to reduce risks and maintain a safe patient environment.
- Ensure appropriate training, drills, and compliance reporting are conducted consistently.
- Practices Standard Precautions. Follows regulations, policies and guidelines on the prevention of infections; does not eat or drink in patient care areas.
- Maintains confidentiality of information; abides by HIPAA regulations.
- Maintains a professional image and follows Hospital's policy on uniforms; consistently wears hospital ID.
- Demonstrates reliable, on-time attendance, which is an essential function of all jobs at Burke.
- Completes mandatory annual learning (Learning Harbor) within deadline.
- Personally adheres to Burke C.A.R.E.S. philosophy by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect and exceeding expectations through service excellence.
- Performs other job related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: High school diploma or equivalent required; associate's degree in engineering, Facilities Management, or a related field preferred. Minimum of 10 years of experience in the operation and maintenance of boilers, HVAC systems, and related equipment. At least 5 years of experience in a supervisory or leadership capacity, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience sufficient to demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Strong knowledge of Joint Commission standards, NFPA codes, CMS requirements, OSHA regulations, and other healthcare compliance frameworks. Proven experience managing hospital life safety and environment of care programs. Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to work collaboratively across disciplines. Certified Healthcare Facility Manager (CHFM) or similar credential strongly preferred
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The Director of Engineering works primarily in an office setting; however, the role requires frequent movement throughout the hospital facility and grounds. The position is regularly exposed to environments that may be hot, humid, noisy, or dusty, particularly in mechanical rooms, utility areas, construction zones, and other restricted spaces. The individual must be able to tolerate these conditions while ensuring compliance, safety, and effective oversight of facility operations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to handle all emergencies that arise in the operation of the plant and the Department.
