Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Four (4) years directly related full-time professional experience in a college or university working with undergraduate students. Professional staff supervision experience. Experience with curricular development and/or teaching first-year seminars. Experience leading student success, retention, and/or graduation initiatives on the college level. Experience conducting presentations and/or training.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master's degree (foreign equivalent or higher) in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Counseling or a related field. Professional experience working with first-year students. Three (3) years of full-time professional experience in academic advising, counseling, or student services at the college or university level. Program development and/or management experience. Formal assessment experience. Experience working with college or university faculty. Experience training and developing professional staff. Experience with University systems (i.e., PeopleSoft, Navigate, Degreeworks, and SLATE).
Brief Description of Duties:
As a member of the Undergraduate Colleges leadership team, the Associate Director provides leadership to the management and administrative direction of Stony Brook University's academic learning communities. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Academic Advising Services, the Associate Director oversees coordination of advising operations, departmental seminars, and co-curricular programming. The Associate Director leads the team of Assistant Directors and Undergraduate College Advisors in initiating, planning, and developing strategies and initiatives which build community and support academic success, retention, and increased graduation rates. The Associate Director regularly interacts with faculty, staff, students, and other University areas on behalf of the department, such as academic advising units, academic departments, student affairs, and enrollment management.
To thrive in this position, the Associate Director must demonstrate flexibility, responsiveness, and problem solving skills. The incumbent must be able to work independently or in a group setting, have strong written and verbal communication skills, and maintain up-to-date knowledge of university policies and best practices.
Duties:
Administration and Supervision:
- Day-to-day administrative responsibility for the academic learning communities, including oversight of advising and programmatic operations. Supervises and effectively manages a growing team of Assistant Directors and Undergraduate College Advisors. Responsibilities include hiring and onboarding, training and development, performance evaluations, and the overall promotion of an inclusive and innovative work environment for professional and student staff. Under the direction of the Assistant Dean for Academic Advising Services, will assist in the budget management for the learning communities' initiatives.
- Contribute to the central planning and organization of Undergraduate College meetings, trainings, and retreats. Prepares reports, schedules, and information used to guide and coordinate the Undergraduate Colleges operations as well as develops and manages the content for web-based, e-mail, and printed publications, resources, and presentations.
- Present to students, parents, and university constituents about the Undergraduate Colleges, and participates in Undergraduate College efforts at open houses, admitted student days, and other Admissions related events.
- Work to ensure that proactive, high-quality academic advising is provided for students and provides managerial leadership for student registration processes, such as coordination of new student registration, advising services guidelines, and tracking advising operations.
- Support the overall advising team in interpreting university policies and procedures, resolving complex problems, and providing initial response to "next level" issues or concerns raised by supervisees. In addition, contribute to the development, testing, and assessment of advising technology used to support the academic advising, registration, and tracking of all students advised by the department.
- Act as a liaison with Undergraduate College teams and provides leadership, guidance, and support for college-based programs and new student welcome week activities.
- Provide oversight for the continued development and delivery of seminars offered through the learning communities. This includes course scheduling, enrollment management, instructor recruitment, compensation, and supervision, coordination of training and development resources for instructors, and managing the evaluation of the seminars.
- Support the Division broadly and may assist with Division of Undergraduate Education priorities, serving on search committees or other Divisional committees as charged.
- Represent the academic learning communities program at University committees and groups, and participates in relevant University functions. This may include participation on retention-related teams or academic advising committees.
- Serve as a liaison for the department with many other units, such as other academic advising areas, academic departments, student affairs and enrollment management.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
Special Notes:
This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $4000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
