Our facilities rely upon fully-functional HVAC systems to maintain controlled environments for patients, staff, and sensitive equipment. We are seeking a dependable HVAC Technician to join our team and ensure continuous operation of equipment, prompt repairs, and proactive maintenance across our Suffolk County locations.
Position Summary
The HVAC Technician will be responsible for the maintenance, service, troubleshooting and repair of existing heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems, as well as related mechanical equipment. The role covers multiple facilities in Suffolk County, NY. The ideal candidate will ensure that all HVAC systems meet medical-facility requirements (e.g., indoor air quality, temperature/humidity control, regulatory standards) and respond promptly to service requests and emergencies.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on HVAC systems, including but not limited to filters, coils, blowers, belts, motors, compressors, dampers, and controls.
- Diagnose and repair HVAC equipment malfunctions (mechanical, electrical, control systems) to minimize downtime and ensure safe, compliant operation.
- Maintain and service ventilation systems (ductwork, exhaust fans, make-up air units) to support air-quality and infection-control protocols in a medical practice environment.
- Respond to emergency service calls in a timely manner to critical equipment and systems.
- Maintain accurate service logs, parts usage records, equipment history, and preventive maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate with vendors or contractors as necessary (e.g., major overhauls, replacement projects), and assist Facilities Manager in overseeing larger HVAC-mechanical projects.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable regulatory standards, safety codes and company policies (including infection control, building codes, life safety, etc.).
- Order parts, manage inventory of consumables (filters, belts, refrigerants, etc.).
- Monitor equipment performance and recommend system upgrades, modifications or replacement when appropriate for efficiency, reliability, or regulatory compliance.
- Assist Facilities Manager with budget tracking for HVAC maintenance and capital improvement items.
- Maintain a clean, safe work environment and operate with respect for the clinical setting (e.g., minimizing disruption to patient care, working in clean zones, following PPE protocols).
Required:
- High school diploma or GED (or equivalent experience in HVAC field).
- Proven experience as an HVAC technician in commercial/industrial or institutional facilities (preferably medical or healthcare environments).
- Valid certification under the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Section 608 Technician Certification (for handling refrigerants) is required.
- Valid driver's license, with ability to travel across sites in Suffolk County.
- Strong mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills, ability to read wiring diagrams, controls schematics, and HVAC system drawings.
- Familiarity with HVAC controls, building automation systems, and standard tools/test equipment.
- Good communication, customer-service orientation; able to interact with medical staff, clinical teams, building occupants.
- Ability to respond to emergency calls and be available for occasional after-hours service.
- Proven ability to maintain detailed maintenance logs, track parts/inventory, and manage work orders.
- Formal HVAC technical training or trade school certificate.
- Experience working in a healthcare facility (e.g., medical practice, hospital, lab environment).
- Knowledge of medical facility HVAC requirements: air changes, differential pressures, specialized filtration, controlled temperature/humidity for sensitive equipment.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Familiarity with life-safety systems, infection control protocols, and medically-sensitive equipment environments
- Must be able to lift/handle equipment, climb ladders, work in crawl spaces or elevated platforms, work in mechanical rooms, and occasionally work outdoors (rooftop units).
- Must be able to work in variable temperature environments (hot boiler rooms, cold chilled-water spaces).
- Must adhere to all safety protocols (lockout/tagout, fall protection, PPE, clean zones for medical practice).
- Occasional after-hours or emergency service calls may be required (weekend, evening).
- Travel between multiple New York Cancer & Blood Specialists facilities in Suffolk County required.
