Summary:
The Histology Technical Specialist is responsible for the management of the clinical workflow and instrument maintenance within the assigned clinical area. He/she is responsible for investigating new instrumentation and testing, developing and implementing protocols and procedures, as well as assuring that all staff are well trained and can demonstrate testing competency. The Specialist reviews quality control and maintenance documentation to assure that compliance with regulatory guidelines are met. Performance updates are reported directly to the Section Leader, or designated pathologist overseeing the area as well as the Administrative Director. The Histology Technical Specialist must be able to extend or adapt existing techniques or develop new approaches to determine corrective actions for difficult or complex problems. The scope of care does not involve direct patient care.
The Histology Technical Specialist must be knowledgeable of Histology principles and methods as well as education techniques sufficient to develop course guidelines, materials, and teaching aids for students, staff employees, and new employees.
The Histology Technical Specialist provides input into personnel evaluations, corrective action, and act as primary designee in the maintenance of personnel competency.
The Histology Technical Specialist is responsible for setting priorities to assure a smooth workflow, performing complex analyses, evaluating new or modifying existing procedures, providing guidance and technical advice to the Laboratory's staff as well as internal and external customers in a timely manner. He/she serves as a positive role model, a support, and promotes good interpersonal efficiency and effectiveness as well as his/her cooperation with the Section Leader, pathologists, physicians and other hospital patient care staff.
The Histology Technical Specialist works with laboratory and hospital internal customers as well as external customers within the medical and business communities.
The Histology Technical Specialist has the freedom and the expertise to independently plan, carry out and to coordinate assignments. He/she must use independent judgment.
Requirements:
To qualify for this position, a person must be accredited by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a Histotechnician or Histotechnologist or have an equivalency of 6 years of experience in a hospital setting, working with routine and advanced special stains. Supervisory experience is preferred.
Knowledge and skill sufficient to plan and carry out all assigned laboratory testing is required. Assignments require an in depth knowledge of histology principles. This includes skill in applying this knowledge to solve complex problems referred by staff and other laboratory personnel, the expertise to evaluate, modify existing and implement new test procedures.
Knowledge of quality control, preventive maintenance and instrumentation is required.
Knowledge of certifying and accreditation agency regulations sufficient to assure section compliance with all agencies is required. This includes the ability to insure that proficiency testing is satisfactorily performed in order to maintain laboratory accreditation.
Requires computer literacy, including the ability to effectively use word processing and spreadsheet software. Training can be provided for these skills.
