What You'll Do

The Administrator-In-Training (AIT) will complete the required training in long term care administration, as outlined in the Indiana State Board of Health Facility Administrators regulations, achieving a level of competency in the oversight of all departments within the community. Service oriented, with an awareness of, and a willingness to, utilize the strengths of an interdisciplinary team of associates, volunteers, and families, recognizing the importance of each.

  • Review and become familiar with the responsibility and duties of the preceptor and AIT. The program for an administrator-in-training shall include, but not be limited to:
  • Standards of competent practice
  • Administration
  • Housekeeping/laundry
  • Facility management
  • Nursing
  • Dietary
  • Activities
  • Business Office
  • Admissions/marketing
  • Overall facility management
  • Be assigned responsibilities in each department, with experience on every shift, including weekends;
  • Become familiar with the job descriptions and leadership responsibilities of the Department Heads;
  • Understand the contributions each position within the facility makes to the overall success;
  • Complete a Nurse Aide Training Class and certification as a Certified Nurse Aide, as directed;
  • Manage on complaint/incident investigation (real or simulated) from report to completion;
  • Conduct a survey of each department during the rotation and report deficiencies, and plans of correction, to the Department Head;
  • Develop a staff schedule (real or simulated) for one month;
  • Serve as an AIT a minimum of twenty (20) hours per week, but not more than ten (10) hours daily. If an AIT is otherwise employed by the facility (in another capacity), those duties may not be counted toward the hours of the AIT program;
  • Complete the AIT program in a minimum of six (6) months and a maximum of twelve (12) months for a minimum total of one thousand forty (1,040) hours;
  • Complete an additional assignments or readings from the preceptor;
  • Meet with the preceptor on a scheduled basis, no less than once per week, for supervision and to problem solve areas of concern;
  • Complete a final report of the internship and an evaluation of the preceptor

Must Hold One Of The Following Educational Achievements

  • A bachelor’s degree (or higher) from an accredited institution and completion of a required administrator-in-training program, or
  • An associate degree in health care from an accredited institution, completion of a specialized course of study in long-term health care administration approved by the board, and completion of a required administrator-in- training program, or
  • Completion of a specialized course of study in long-term health care administrator prescribed by the board and completion of a required administrator-in-training program and has registered and been approved as an AIT, with the Indiana State Board of Health Facility Administrators (ISBHFA).
