Job Duties:

The City of Virginia Beach Public Works department is currently hiring one Motor Equipment Operator III. We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Motor Equipment Operator III to join our team. In this role, you will assist in a wide variety of duties to include:

  • Operate an excavator for the completion of ditch maintenance activities such as mowing vegetation and grading.
  • Operate a light truck in carrying tools, equipment, and supplies, to and from job site.
  • Operate a motor truck engaged in snow removal, or sanding of icy streets and roads.
  • Operate dump truck in connection with the transportation of sand, stone, gravel, and supplies.
  • Operate a Ditch Master.
  • Operate a laser level and grade rod for accurate measurements of ditch grades.
  • Service and perform minor repairs on automotive equipment include, but not limited to, excavator, frontend loader, and backhoe.
  • Assist in loading and unloading materials and equipment transported by truck.
  • Position also requires a significant amount of work by hand when cleaning drainage structures, pipes, ditches, removing debris, downing trees, and shoveling sediment.
  • Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less.
  • Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on then current workloads and department needs.
  • Installation of erosion and sediment control applications for the excavation of off-road ditches.

Must possess a Commercial Driver’s License – Class A (VA or NC)

This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

Pre-employment physical is required.

  • CDL Hiring Bonus - The $4,000 CDL (Class A or B) Hiring Bonus is for newly hired employees only. The bonus will be paid in three increments during the first year of employment.
  • $1,000 with first paycheck
  • $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating)
  • $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating)

Minimum Requirements:

MINIMUMS: Requires completion of the tenth (10th) grade, plus three (3) years experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Must possess a valid Virginia or North Carolina Commercial Drivers License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employees supervisor based on position assigned.

This is position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.

  • Possess a High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience in operating heavy equipment such as excavator, front end loader, backhoe, Vacuum Truck, etc.
  • Drainage or utility maintenance experience.
  • Experience in the daily maintenance requirements of heavy equipment.
  • Familiarity with Miss Utility processes.
  • Possess a valid Escort Vehicle Driver Certification
  • Possess a Tank Vehicle Endorsement Certification
  • Computer experience.
  • Power tool experience.
  • Laser level and grade rod experience.
