Summary:

The Pre-K Teacher Assistant is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in supervising children to ensure their safety and well being; providing instruction and facilitation to groups and individual children under the direction of the Teacher; and collaborating with the Teacher to assess the strengths and needs of children and design appropriate classroom activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist teacher in any way possible which may include but is not necessarily limited to:
  • Plan activities for assigned groups or individual children.
  • Implement the daily schedule as assigned.
  • Decorate the room with bulletin boards, pictures, children's artwork and other hangings.
  • Serve breakfast, lunches, and snacks.
  • Help with materials and room clean-up and organization.

Provide nurturing and supportive environment for children using positive behavior interventions and preventative strategies to manage classroom behavior.

  • Complete required number of training hours each year by local workshops and trainings.
  • Assume temporary responsibilities of the teacher in her/his absence.
  • Report any special needs or problems of individual children to the classroom teacher.
  • Work with children who have special needs supporting their developmental and behavioral characteristics.
  • Report any cases of suspected child abuse and/or neglect to Director or make a direct call to DCYF (1-800-RICHILD).
  • Assist in supervising naptime, outdoor play, and toileting.
  • Assist the Teacher in implementing educational plans to meet the needs of individual students.
  • Confer with teacher in preparation of school reports.
  • Complete weekly progress notes to be mailed each and every Friday.
  • Effect a positive learning environment.
  • Actively participate in teacher-directed activities with the students.
  • Create bulletin boards and other classroom decorations as requested by the teacher.
  • Maintain positive student-staff relationships.
  • Cover exploratory Friday activity lunch periods and bus duty as scheduled.
  • Plan and coordinate exploratory.
  • Submit exploratory plan one week in advance as per policy and procedure.
  • Report to staff regarding activity at Tuesday staff meeting.
  • Covers class lunch table.
  • Be on time and monitor bus duty as per policy and procedure on assigned day.
  • Effectively manage behaviors within the classroom and other settings within the program.
  • Follow CAP City policies and procedures regarding behavior management.
  • Attend training and use non-violent crisis intervention as taught.
  • Modify programming as necessary to positive behavior.
  • Use Reality Therapy or other psycho-educational method to affect positive behavior change.
  • Attend weekly staff supervision meetings and general meetings.
  • Attend 90% of scheduled staff and team meetings including days the assistant is absent.
  • Attend at least two general staff meetings per year.
  • Perform various duties as requested by the classroom teacher.
  • Correct papers and tests.
  • Run off dittos.
  • Give tests as directed.
  • Get snack and other classroom supplies.
  • Monitor store time.
  • Monitor break time.

Other information:

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED).
  • CDA or active participation in CDA program or completion of RIDE-approved Teacher Assistant Training Program OR 12 credit hours of early childhood or related coursework.
  • Level I or II RIELS certification preferred (must be able to complete within 2 years from date of employment).
  • Language Skills - Ability to read and interpret lesson plans and books. Ability to write and/or print posters and signs.
  • Mathematical Skills - Ability to perform basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
  • Reasoning Ability - Ability to recognize problems.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations - Ability to work towards CPR & first aid certification, and work towards CDA certification.
