INSURANCE SPECIALIST

The Medical Office Specialist is responsible for calculating estimates for upcoming surgeries scheduled at the surgery center and contacting patients to arrange upfront payment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Verifying patients’ insurance benefits, calculating the patient pay amounts and contacting patients to verify information and collect balances due two weeks prior to surgery.
- Working the self-pay collection report and contacting patients regarding their outstanding balances.
- Pulling the automatic payment report from the merchant account and posting payments to the patient’s accounts.
- Contacting patients with an outstanding self-pay balance and setting up payment arrangements.
- Making the decision, after internal collection efforts are exhausted, to send accounts to external collections.
- Managing the self pay credit balance report, submitting accounts to the manager for approval of refund
- All other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A high school diploma.
- Experience in a medical office setting, preferably at least 2 years and preferably with billing functions;
- Excellent communication and customer service skills;
- Basic knowledge of keyboard and accurate data entry skills;
- Technical skills sufficient to be able to run reports and interpret data;
- A team player who is able to facilitate people working together in a collegial and efficient manner;
- Ability to communicate clearly in person and/or on the phone and establish/maintain cooperative relationships with patients, physicians and staff;
- Ability to organize and prioritize tasks effectively;
- Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS
- Medical office setting.
- Well-lit and well-ventilated adequate space.
- Some exposure to communicable diseases and other conditions common to a clinical environment.
- Requires sitting for extensive periods of time.
- Must be able to view a computer screen for an extended period.
- Light lifting required up to 15 lbs.
- Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, operate a calculator, telephone, copier, and such other equipment, as necessary.
