Job Title: Sign Language Interpreter

Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled and passionate Sign Language Interpreter to join our team. The Sign Language Interpreter will play an integral role in facilitating munication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their teachers, peers, and other school personnel. We are looking for a dynamic professional who is fluent in American Sign Language (ASL) and dedicated to promoting the academic and social well-being of students through effective munication support.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation and translation services between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings.
  • Facilitate munication between students and teachers during classroom instruction, discussions, and other academic activities.
  • Assist students with understanding and expressing concepts, ideas, and information presented in spoken English.
  • Interpret and translate educational materials, assignments, tests, and other written materials into ASL or English as needed.
  • Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and parents to ensure effective munication and access to educational opportunities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Provide support and advocacy for students in accessing acmodations, resources, and services to meet their individual needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, and families.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) preferred.
  • Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or eligibility for certification.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, including knowledge of specialized vocabulary and linguistic features.
  • Knowledge of deaf culture, munication strategies, and assistive technology used by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Strong interpersonal, munication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings preferred.
