We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Sign Language Interpreter to join our team at Soliant in Sherman, Connecticut.

Job Summary:

The Sign Language Interpreter will play a vital role in facilitating communication between students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their teachers, peers, and other school personnel.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide interpretation and translation services between spoken English and American Sign Language (ASL) for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings.
  • Facilitate communication between students and teachers during classroom instruction, discussions, and other academic activities.
  • Assist students with understanding and expressing concepts, ideas, and information presented in spoken English.
  • Interpret and translate educational materials, assignments, tests, and other written materials into ASL or English as needed.
  • Collaborate with teachers, support staff, and parents to ensure effective communication and access to educational opportunities for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Provide support and advocacy for students in accessing accommodations, resources, and services to meet their individual needs.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all interactions with students, staff, and families.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, Special Education, or a related field.
  • Certification from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or National Association of the Deaf (NAD) preferred.
  • Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) certification as a Sign Language Interpreter or eligibility for certification.
  • Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and English, including knowledge of specialized vocabulary and linguistic features.
  • Knowledge of deaf culture, communication strategies, and assistive technology used by individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Experience working with students who are deaf or hard of hearing in educational settings preferred.
