Position Overview

The Surgical Technologist plays a vital role in the operating room, assisting the surgical team by ensuring a sterile environment and preparing necessary instruments for surgical procedures.

Key Responsibilities

As a Surgical Technologist, your duties will include:

  • Preparing and maintaining sterile equipment for surgical operations.
  • Passing instruments, sponges, and sutures to the surgical team during procedures.
  • Assisting with inventory management and sterilization of surgical instruments.
  • Preparing and selecting appropriate equipment for various surgical procedures.
  • Transferring patients as required and ensuring smooth turnover of instruments to decontamination.
  • Performing additional tasks as assigned by the surgical team.

Qualifications

To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Completion of an accredited Surgical Technologist program.
  • Commitment to fostering a positive departmental culture.
  • Ability to respond to on-call duties within a 30-minute timeframe.

Additional Requirements for Senior Level

Two years of experience as a Surgical Technologist is necessary.


Additional Requirements for Specialist Level

At least one year of experience as a Senior Surgical Technologist at the University of Michigan and current certification from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA).


Desired Qualifications

Preferred qualifications include:

  • Certification from the NBSTSA.
  • Experience in a pediatric surgical setting.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks effectively.

Work Schedule

This is a full-time position with rotating day and night shifts, including night, weekend, and holiday on-call responsibilities.

This position is part of the bargaining unit represented by the United Michigan Medicine Allied Professionals (UMMAP).
