Gesher Human Services acts as a crucial bridge to hope and opportunities for individuals in the community and workplace. Our comprehensive workforce development, behavioral health, and inclusive programs address the diverse needs of the metropolitan Detroit population while emphasizing the Jewish community.
ROLE SUMMARY
- Providing empathetic care and assistance to elderly individuals with dementia in a specialized day program setting.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Mandatory:
- Valid Michigan driver's license.
Preferred:
- Minimum of six months experience working with senior citizens facing cognitive, memory, or physical challenges.
- Experience in delivering personal care and/or therapeutic interventions.
- Completion of dementia training within the initial employment period.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with participants, colleagues, and the public.
- Basic literacy skills for understanding instructions and maintaining records.
- Driving experience of six months to one year; familiarity with larger vehicles is advantageous.
- Clean driving record that meets the safety standards set by the Agency's insurance provider.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Build strong, individualized relationships with each participant based on thorough psychosocial and physical assessments.
- Collaborate with professionals to create and manage personalized care plans for participants.
- Facilitate activity groups with support from the clinical team.
- Provide tailored support and assistance as required.
- Assist participants with personal hygiene, grooming, bathing, and other care activities.
- Ensure participant safety through ongoing monitoring of health, behavior, and environment.
- Accompany participants on community outings.
- Contribute to the cleanliness and safety of program areas.
- Prepare and serve meals to participants.
- Transport participants in a SMART vehicle following designated routes and schedules.
- Maintain vehicle cleanliness and perform minor maintenance tasks.
- Attend relevant seminars and training sessions as required.
- Assist participants with boarding and alighting the vehicle safely.
- Keep detailed trip records.
- Participate in Agency committee assignments as directed.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
- Provide support to family caregivers upon request.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Environmental Factors:
- Moderate noise levels in the office environment.
- Ability to work in confined spaces.
- Extended periods of computer usage and sitting.
Physical Demands:
- The role involves standing, sitting, talking, listening, and using hands and fingers for computer work.
- Close vision is necessary for computer-related tasks.
- Physical assistance may be required, with participants typically weighing around 130 pounds.
Reasonable accommodations will be provided as needed.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS
This position is non-exempt and qualifies for overtime pay in accordance with the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act.
