Job Summary

The Bridge to Independence Program at Catholic Social Services of the Diocese of Scranton provides housing and supportive services for young adults, ages 18-26, who have mental health concerns. Our primary objective is to develop and enhance life skills that will enable program participants to live independently and attain self-sufficiency.

Job Responsibilities
  • Maintain a harmonious residential environment, free of tension and stress, to ensure all residents can live together comfortably.
  • Utilize active listening techniques with residents to promote effective communication.
  • Teach residents appropriate interaction and activity of daily living skills to enhance their independence.
  • Promote and respect the dignity and self-worth of each individual resident.
  • Maintain a respectful environment amongst residents and support them in attaining their goals.
  • Monitor and ensure residents take medication as prescribed and assist in keeping accurate records for each resident.
  • Document and identify any unusual behavior, subsequent events, direction, and intervention in resident's progress notes and in the staff communication log.
  • Maintain documentation regarding whereabouts/activity of each resident and document any ongoing goal attainment for each resident.
  • Complete an incident report in the event of an unusual occurrence, medical, or emergency situation.
  • Follow and enforce program house rules and monitor residents during evening and night time hours to ensure safety and well-being.
  • Maintain order during established quiet hours and perform an hourly walk-through of the premises to ensure safety of the environment.
  • Give clear and concise shift reports with regard to each resident to oncoming staff.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in ongoing in-service/out-service training programs when required.
  • Employees will also be required to participate in monthly VIRTUS online training.
  • It is expected that the staff will work at least two (2) major holidays per year.
  • Other duties as assigned to you by the Program Supervisor or Catholic Social Services administrative Staff.
  • Adhere to all Policies and Procedures defined by the program.
Required Qualifications
  • The individual will possess a high school diploma; an associate's or bachelor's degree is desired, however, experience may be substituted.
  • The individual must be of good moral character, dependable, reliable, and emotionally stable.
  • The individual must be able to pass a physical examination upon employment and annually thereafter.
  • The individual must possess a current/valid Pennsylvania driver's license and must have access to an insured automobile while on duty.
  • The individual must consent to a criminal record check through both Pennsylvania Access to Criminal History (PATCH, FBI Clearance, and the State Child Abuse Clearance.
  • The individual must consent to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • The individual must be trained and certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid. If the individual does not hold current valid certifications, training will be provided for the individual during the employment orientation period (first 40 hours).
  • The Diocese of Scranton requires all employees complete an initial VIRTUS training Program, designed to empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.
  • Employees will also be required to monitor the VIRTUS websites and complete any internet updates as they become assigned.
  • Employees must also complete all other trainings programs, out services, in-services, conferences, seminars, conventions, etc., as assigned by the Program Supervisor.
