Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Facilities Maintenance Specialist to join our team at the Texas Department of Public Safety. As a key member of our facilities team, you will be responsible for performing complex building maintenance and construction work, serving as the primary caretaker of our state facilities, and ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our buildings and grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair of building and/or stationary equipment involving carpentry, plumbing, mechanical work, masonry, painting, roof gutter, drains, and storm drains.
  • Assist with plumbing, electrical, or heating, ventilation, and air conditioning work.
  • Perform inspections, minor equipment repair, and preventative maintenance on equipment, tools, buildings, and grounds to ensure efficient and safe operations.
  • Install and repair sprinkler systems, assist the master plumber, and oversee watering schedules as needed.
  • Mix and spread pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.
  • Perform general custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows, light fixtures, and carpets.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect areas such as restrooms, offices, and other facilities; use and apply cleaning chemicals as appropriate.
  • Assist with moving furniture and boxes by carrying or using equipment.
  • Complete appropriate documents, work orders, and reports, e.g., duration of time spent on each job, materials used, and description of work completed.
  • Serve as a liaison between contractors/vendors and assigned contract monitors.
  • Read simple drawing, sketches, and blueprints as necessary to determine details of assigned tasks.
  • Order, receive, and account for supplies.
  • Assist other facility technicians.
  • Adhere to best methods and sequences for accomplishing work orders or daily schedules of assigned tasks and advise management of any noted building or grounds issues.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in building trades work on commercial or residential projects and attainment of competent skills in at least one (1) skills area (frame, finishing, carpentry, plumbing, sanitation, painting, grounds, etc.).
  • Valid driver license from state of residence. May be required to obtain a pesticide applicator license and fork lift operator certification.
  • Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrate DPS' core values: Integrity, Excellence, Accountability, and Teamwork.
  • Knowledge of hand and power tools to provide maintenance, repair, dismantling, refresh, and remodeling of the building structures and grounds.
  • Ability to learn a variety of processes, procedures, methods, standard materials, and supplies applicable to same.
  • Ability to learn procedures for maintaining and making minor repairs to tools, equipment, and machinery.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate and maintain: motorized vehicles and equipment, gas and diesel powered equipment, floor maintenance equipment, pallet jacks and dollies, and sand or salt on icy pavement.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers.
  • Ability to prioritize in a multi-demand environment and meet multiple and/or conflicting deadlines without sacrificing safety, accuracy, timeliness, or professionalism.
  • Ability to accurately estimate materials requirements for repair or construction tasks.
  • Ability to quickly and efficiently access relevant information, and be able to present research and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.
  • Possess appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software/systems or ability to quickly learn.
  • Ability to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations, and adhere to applicable laws and policies related to such information.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and comply with safety standards and best practices.
  • Ability to work after-hours, holidays, and weekends and to respond to maintenance emergencies as they occur.
Physical and Environmental Demands

Environment: Office and outdoors with a wide variety of temperatures ranging from winter to summer; and heavy dust, dirt, noise, moving equipment, and other adverse factors.

Ambulatory skills, e.g. stand, walk, sit; stoop, balance, crouch, climb, work from ladders, scaffolds, and other high facilities; as well as tight quarters such as crawl spaces below floors and above ceilings.

Hand-eye coordination and arm/hand/finger dexterity; ability to bend various sizes of singular and multiple conduits by hand; may utilize material and handling equipment such as forklifts and boom lifts.

Ability to speak, hear, and exercise visual acuity.

Ability to carry weights of 50 pounds anticipated for this position.

Driving requirements: Moderate frequency twenty (20%).
