About the Role

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Associate Vice President for Human Resources to join our team. This is a key leadership position that will play a critical role in shaping the human resources strategy and direction for the institution.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organizational Culture and Inclusivity
    • Lead college-wide efforts to create and sustain a culture of care among college employees and in all interactions with students, colleagues, and community members.
    • Work collaboratively with other leaders to design and execute initiatives that promote and measure employee engagement at the college.
    • Direct the planning, development, and implementation of programs to promote inclusive practices among all members of the college community.
  • Department Planning and Effectiveness
    • Provide strategic direction and planning for the Human Resources Department.
    • Establish desired outcomes and associated metrics for assessing outcome achievement.
    • Engage the Human Resources team in regular assessment activities and improvement efforts related to established goals and outcomes.
  • Human Resources Service Delivery
    • Ensure that the Human Resources Department offers and appropriately staffs and resources all the services needed to effectively support employees of the college.
    • Evaluate services regularly and work with the team to identify improvements in delivery, efficiency, and effectiveness of services.
  • Policy Compliance and Reporting
    • Ensure that the college maintains compliance with all applicable human resources policies, laws, and regulations.
    • Develop, implement, and update for currency all college procedures related to human resources policy compliance.
  • Advisement, Support, and Consultation
    • Provide employees, supervisors, and college leaders with sound consultation and advisement on complex human resources issues, including employee relations situations.
    • Design and implement training programs for college leaders and others with supervisory responsibilities.
  • Performance Management
    • Supervise staff in the Human Resources Department and provide clear guidance, expectations, and performance feedback to all staff members.
    • Document and address performance issues in an effective and timely manner.
Requirements
  • A master's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Multi-year work history that demonstrates progressively higher levels of managerial and administrative responsibility in human resources.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of human resources laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of payroll, benefits administration, position classification and compensation, and recruitment and selection processes.
  • Thorough knowledge of the effective use of technology and methods for leveraging technology for effectiveness.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of performance management principles and best practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of planning and goal-setting approaches and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of process implementation and outcomes measurement practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of data analysis and reporting.
  • Experience leading a team and managing a department or enterprise.
  • Experience developing and managing budgets.
  • Experience in workforce planning and organizational development.
  • Experience working with diverse groups and populations and a commitment to building cultural competence across the college.
  • Experience in strategic and annual planning.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Work experience within an institution of higher education.
  • Experience with Virginia Department of Human Resources Management (DHRM) policy administration.
  • One or more professional certifications specific to human resources (e.g., Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), Professional in Human Resources (PHR), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR).
  • Experience with Title IX administration.
