Lead Pathology Assistant

The Pathologist Assistant Supervisor oversees the grossing area, autopsy suite, and pathology operations within the morgue. This role is crucial in ensuring that the department operates smoothly and efficiently, aligning with the mission and vision of VCU Health.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise daily operations in the grossing area, ensuring compliance with laboratory standards.
- Collaborate with laboratory management, administrators, and physicians to maintain a skilled workforce.
- Manage scheduling, policy formulation, and operational tasks.
- Provide training and mentorship to new hires and existing staff.
- Deliver technical guidance to laboratory personnel and residents, documenting their training and competency.
- Maintain laboratory procedure manuals and ensure adherence to regulatory requirements.
- Oversee quality control and quality assurance functions within the department.
- Assist pathologists in grossing surgical specimens and conducting postmortem examinations.
- Coordinate with the Medical Director to facilitate resident training in the Department of Pathology.
Qualifications:
Licensure:
Must be certified as a Pathologists' Assistant by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or be eligible for certification within three months of hire.
Experience:
Minimum of four years of experience as a Pathologists' Assistant, with a focus on surgical and autopsy pathology, including at least two years in a leadership capacity. Previous experience in histology and dissection is preferred.
Education:
A Master's Degree in Science from an accredited Pathologists' Assistant Program is required.
Independent Actions:
Ability to perform independently while collaborating with management on personnel issues. Responsibilities include troubleshooting laboratory issues and ensuring equipment maintenance and cleanliness.
