Job Summary:

The City of Las Cruces, NM is seeking a skilled Fleet Technician I to join our team. As a key member of our Utilities Department, you will be responsible for performing general automotive and light/medium diesel mechanical repairs and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspect, repair, and maintain mechanical components on a variety of light/medium-diesel-powered and gasoline-powered equipment.
  • Operate a wide variety of hand tools and equipment to perform the necessary tasks of the job.
  • Demonstrate skill and safety measures in performing diagnostic and troubleshooting services.
  • Conduct vehicle safety inspections, provide preventive maintenance, and check fluid levels.
  • Perform repairs on hoses, vehicles, tire changes, and related activities.
  • Overhaul, maintain, and repair engines, transmissions, and related components.
  • Read and interpret manuals and documents relating to service and repair needs.
  • Perform field service calls to repair equipment and transport equipment to and from maintenance and repair shops.
  • Test repaired, tuned, and overhauled vehicles and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of work provided.

Requirements:

  • Associate degree or Automotive Trade School education.
  • Two (2) years of automotive or mechanical experience or four (4) years' experience in a professional shop, with certificates for up-to-date technical classes attended.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Class B or higher Commercial Driver's License required within one year of hire.
  • ASE automotive- light truck certification (A Series) is preferred.

Working Conditions:

This position involves working in a warehouse or workshop environment with exposure to hazards including but not limited to welding fumes, extreme heat, trash, used syringes, electrical shocks, and sharp objects.

Physical Demands:

This position requires heavy physical demands, including lifting heavy tools and parts up to 45lbs, pulling, climbing, standing for long periods of time, laying down, and kneeling in confined areas with hazardous materials.
