ABOUT SWLAHEC
The mission of SWLAHEC's Testing & Prevention Program is to enhance community health by decreasing the incidence of HIV and STD infections in Public Health Region 5 through comprehensive education, advocacy, and access to services. In collaboration with the Louisiana Department of Health STD/HIV/Hepatitis Program, SWLAHEC offers complimentary community-based services, including screenings for HIV, Hepatitis C, and Syphilis, alongside risk-reduction counseling and treatment referrals. The organization partners with local entities to maximize direct service delivery through the distribution of free prevention resources. SWLAHEC is committed to reducing stigma associated with blood-borne infections and raising awareness of the needs of individuals living with or impacted by HIV.
POSITION SUMMARY
The HIV Prevention and Testing Coordinator will work part-time under the supervision of the Harm Reduction Program Coordinator, assisting in the management of projects related to Counseling, Testing, Referral Services (CTRS), and Prevention Management (PM) Site protocols. This role is primarily focused on preventing new cases of blood-borne infections while providing client support through education, prevention strategies, testing, referrals, and advocacy efforts. The Coordinator must establish rapport with clients while upholding professional boundaries. The position entails approximately 30 hours of work per week, based out of various locations including the main office and mobile testing units. Travel within the region and occasional weekend work may be required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Deliver non-judgmental, confidential services and resources to clients, aiding them in achieving a personalized understanding of wellness.
- Cultivate and sustain relationships with clients, community partners, and prevention management sites.
- Provide education and information on HIV, Viral Hepatitis, Syphilis, substance use, Harm Reduction, and available resources.
- Obtain CTRS Certification and conduct free testing for HIV, HCV, and Syphilis, including post-test counseling and appropriate referrals.
- Collaborate with CTRS certified peers to facilitate training and address queries regarding mobile and satellite testing.
- Assist with the delivery and communication of Prevention Management Site services.
- Maintain accurate records, including logbooks, referrals, and data collection.
- Manage inventory and orders for testing supplies and equipment.
- Travel as necessary for training, meetings, and workshops.
- Communicate effectively with team members and participants.
- Perform additional administrative tasks as required.
- Engage with clients in a culturally sensitive and respectful manner.
- Collaborate with Harm Reduction Program Staff in Region 5 to ensure alignment of program goals.
- Operate with mindfulness regarding the principles of Harm Reduction as a public health and social justice initiative.
- Stay informed about relevant topics impacting this field, such as National HIV Testing Day and World AIDS Day.
- Raise awareness and combat stigma with factual information and empathy.
- Address misinformation with science-based data.
- Ensure confidentiality and anonymity in handling sensitive information.
- Recognize and assist clients in overcoming barriers to accessing resources.
Education & Experience
- Preferred education in social services or public health, though not mandatory.
- Experience in mutual aid, street outreach, or working with high-risk and marginalized populations.
- Relevant lived experience related to drug use, sex work, housing instability, incarceration, or living with HIV/AIDS and/or hepatitis C.
- Familiarity with community-based approaches, social justice, trauma-informed care, and harm reduction philosophies.
- Valid ID, active driver's license, safe driving record, and auto liability insurance compliant with SWLAHEC requirements.
- Strongly encouraged full COVID-19 vaccination due to the nature of interactions with participants.
- Proficiency in computer applications including word processing, email, and spreadsheets.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
