The Senior Outpatient Coding Specialist plays a crucial role in meticulously abstracting data in accordance with the Official International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-Clinical Modification (CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Guidelines, as well as adhering to directives from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) throughout the Hackensack Meridian Health (HMH) network. This position involves entering essential abstracted patient information into the electronic medical record system and engaging with physicians when necessary.

This is a remote position.

Responsibilities

A typical day for a Senior Outpatient Coding Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Assigning codes for reimbursement, compliance, and regulatory adherence using established guidelines and coding conventions.
  • Managing the coding and abstraction of patient encounters, which encompasses diagnostic and procedural data, significant reportable elements, and complications.
  • Evaluating medical records to identify documentation deficiencies.
  • Reviewing and confirming that documentation supports existing diagnoses, procedures, and other charges.
  • Identifying reportable elements, complications, and quality measures.
  • Engaging with physicians to clarify information through the physician query process.
  • Assigning CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes.
  • Possessing knowledge to address National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) and National Coverage Determinations (NCD) / Local Coverage Determinations (LCD) edits.
  • Maintaining required productivity and quality standards.
  • Performing additional duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhering to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications

Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), or equivalent educational programs.
  • A minimum of 4+ years of coding experience, preferably in a Trauma Level 1 and Academic Teaching facility.
  • A solid understanding of physiology, medical terminology, and anatomy.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including typing speed and accuracy.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competence in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Expertise in coding Ancillary Accounts such as Diagnostic Radiology and Cardiology.
  • Experience in coding Emergency Department and Infusion-based services, particularly in Oncology.
  • Skill in coding Observation and Procedure Room services, including Endoscopies and Cardiac Catheterizations.
  • Proficiency in coding all outpatient services, especially Operating Room procedures.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Certification in at least one of the following is required at hire or must be obtained within 6 months of hire/transfer into the position: American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
