The Senior Outpatient Coding Specialist plays a crucial role in the accurate abstraction of data in accordance with the Official International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-10-Clinical Modification (CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS) Guidelines, as well as directives from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) across the Hackensack Meridian Health network. This position involves entering essential abstracted patient information into the electronic medical record system and engaging with physicians for clarifications when necessary.

This role is designated as remote.

Key Responsibilities:
A typical day for a Senior Outpatient Coding Specialist at Hackensack Meridian Health includes:

  • Assigning codes for reimbursement, research, and compliance with regulatory standards, utilizing established guidelines and coding conventions.
  • Managing the coding and abstraction of patient encounters, including diagnostic and procedural data, significant reportable elements, and complications.
  • Reviewing medical records to identify documentation gaps.
  • Verifying that documentation supports existing diagnoses, procedures, and other charges.
  • Identifying reportable elements, complications, and other quality metrics.
  • Engaging with physicians to clarify information through the physician query process.
  • Assigning CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10-CM codes.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of and addressing National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) and National Coverage Determinations (NCD) / Local Coverage Determinations (LCD) edits.
  • Maintaining required productivity and quality standards.
  • Performing additional duties and/or projects as assigned.
  • Adhering to organizational competencies and standards of behavior.

Qualifications:
Education, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), or equivalent programs.
  • A minimum of 2+ years of coding experience in a Trauma Level 1 and Academic Teaching facility.
  • A strong understanding of physiology, medical terminology, and anatomy.
  • Proficiency in computer skills, including typing speed and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Proficient in computer applications, including Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Expertise in coding for Observation and Procedure Rooms, such as Endoscopies and Cardiac Catheterizations.
  • Proficient in coding for Emergency Department and Infusion-based services, including Oncology.
  • Proficient in coding for Ancillary Accounts, such as Diagnostic Radiology and Cardiology.

Licenses and Certifications Required:

  • Certification in at least one of the following is required at hire or must be obtained within one year of hire/transfer into the position: American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC).
