The Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) performs critical pre-analytical and preparatory steps for clinical laboratory tests, ensuring accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients. This role requires attention to detail, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities- Perform preparatory functions for routine and high-complexity tests, including centrifuging, pouring off specimens, and preparing specimens for testing.
- Prepare peripheral smears, stain peripheral smears by automated method, and load primary bar-coded specimens on an analyzer.
- Primary inoculation of microbiology specimens, including slide preparation and staining by automated method.
- Prepare 24-hour urine containers with preservatives, monitor work pending reports, and communicate critical results.
- Follow laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, and preparation.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or courses in hard sciences preferred.
- Basic computer skills, medical terminology, and phlebotomy skills preferred.
- Certification by NCA, ASCP, or comparable institution is desirable.
