Job Overview

Position: Traveling Fiber Testing Specialist

Employment Type: Full-time W2 - Fiber Technician

Work Location: This is a traveling position across various locations.

Compensation: $35 - $45 per hour, with a daily hotel per diem of $100. Additional per diem for truck and tools based on the equipment used.

Note: Candidates must possess valid US work authorization; visa sponsorship is not available.

Essential Qualifications
  • Prior experience in telecommunications or a related field is essential; no training will be provided.
  • Must have a personal work vehicle, such as a truck, van, or large SUV.
Job Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive fiber testing.
  • Maintain and update work logs using company systems.
  • Plan and assess job requirements, including materials and resources.
  • Interpret work orders, wiring diagrams, and equipment schematics, adhering to standard operational practices.
  • Be available for varying shifts, including potential overtime, weekends, and holidays.
Key Duties

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Performing fiber characterization, which includes:
    • Measuring PMD (Polarization Mode Dispersion)
    • Assessing CD (Chromatic Dispersion)
    • Evaluating AP (Attenuation Profile)
    • Determining ORL (Optical Return Loss)
    • Utilizing various OTDR functions. This list is not exhaustive but highlights the primary tests required. Deliverables to clients will include a complete set of fiber characterization results as specified by the client.
  • Possessing a valid state driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.
  • Flexibility to work varying hours, including potential night shifts as required.
  • Traveling between Central Office locations.
  • Ability to work at heights (e.g., using extension ladders).
  • Capability to work in confined spaces such as manholes.
  • Identifying and repairing fiber optic splices.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with ROADM or IOF fiber testing.
  • Skills in diagnosing fiber issues and conducting routine tests, including using Fusion Splicer and OTDR.
  • Familiarity with working around live fiber.
  • Ability to read Fiber MDF in Central Offices.
  • Experience working independently with minimal supervision.
