Position Summary:

The Acute Care Nutrition Specialist collaborates with the healthcare team to deliver patient-centered nutritional care, adhering to evidence-based best practices. This role is vital in ensuring optimal nutrition for patients during their hospital stay.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assess patients for nutritional risk in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Gather comprehensive nutritional histories from patients and their families using effective interviewing methods.
  • Conduct age-appropriate nutrition assessments, utilizing historical, clinical, and laboratory data to identify malnutrition risks.
  • Develop and implement tailored nutrition care plans following the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' 'Nutrition Care Process'.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient progress regularly to ensure nutritional objectives are achieved.
  • Recommend enteral and parenteral nutrition support when necessary, managing enteral nutrition and overseeing parenteral nutrition as required.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary rounds to discuss patient care and nutrition needs.
  • Educate patients and caregivers on therapeutic diets, assessing learning needs and preferences.
  • Document all assessments and care plans in the electronic medical record, adhering to hospital policies.
  • Engage in performance improvement initiatives as assigned.
  • Provide outpatient nutrition care in specialized clinics based on referrals.
  • Ensure compliance with ethical standards, licensure requirements, and professional practice guidelines.
  • Apply regulatory standards in delivering nutrition services.
  • Actively participate in hospital committees, representing the nutrition department's interests.
  • Be available for weekend and holiday coverage to maintain consistent patient care.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by leadership.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics or a related field is required.
  • Completion of a dietetic internship and successful passing of the national registration exam (RD status) is mandatory.
Skills:
  • Proficient in using hospital information systems for data management.
  • Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, with a compassionate approach.
  • Strong interpersonal abilities.
Licensure:
Ohio dietitians must hold a valid license from the State Medical Board of Ohio.

Certification:
Registered Dietitian with the Commission on Dietetic Registration of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

Working Conditions:
Employees are required to wear Personal Protective Equipment as mandated by hospital policies. The role may involve prolonged periods of standing, moving, or walking throughout the shift.
