Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Cardiac Rehabilitation Registered Nurse to join our team at The Miriam Hospital. As a key member of our Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, you will play a vital role in providing high-quality patient care and contributing to the growth and development of our program.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct comprehensive evaluations and physical assessments of new patients, obtaining patient history, pertinent diagnostic data, and risk factor information from medical records.
  • Review assessments made by exercise physiologists when goal planning and ongoing assessment.
  • Prescribe exercise for patients in Phases I through IV of the cardiac rehabilitation process, reviewing patient responses to exercise prescription with cardiac rehab exercise physiologists to ensure appropriateness.
  • Modify exercise prescriptions when changes in medical status, medications, or environmental conditions occur.
  • Conduct supervised exercise sessions for patients and conduct patient education classes, including ongoing revision and evaluation of materials.
  • Evaluate hemodynamic, electrocardiographic, and symptomatic response to exercise and assess appropriateness of responses to prescribed exercise intensity.
  • Assess psychosocial adjustment to illness, including depression, returns to work, family adjustments, or any significant social dysfunctions that may affect full rehabilitation.
  • Make referrals to or work with other agencies on patient's behalf.
  • Follow routine standing orders, including the initiation of Advanced Cardiac Life Support procedures.
  • Receive and transcribe physician's orders, maintain correspondence with referring physicians, and notify referring physicians of any untoward events.
  • Intervene when necessary and appropriate in situations requiring nursing assessment and/or intervention.
  • Initiate emergency procedures per protocols.
  • Respond to all emergencies during program hours and prepare patients for transport to the next level of care.
  • Prioritize patient care and assist exercise physiologists in their roles to appropriately prioritize their care.
  • Assist co-workers in the interpretation and significance of any electrocardiograph or physiological changes that patients may be experiencing.
  • Serve as a resource for other professionals who work closely with the Cardiac Rehabilitation population.
  • Provide in-service training to professionals interested in cardiac rehabilitation and exercise physiology.
  • May assist manager in the functional supervision and instruction of students and volunteers.
  • Participate in projects that promote the growth and development of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program.
  • Assist with maintenance of emergency supplies and crash cart.
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining current referral patterns.
  • Maintain quality assurance, safety, environmental, and infection control in accordance with established hospital department policies, procedures, and objectives.
  • Perform charge duties as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Requirements
  • Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island by the Rhode Island Board of Nursing or licensure as a Registered Nurse in accordance with the Nurse Licensure Compact agreement of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Rhode Island.
  • Conforms to the Code of Professional Nurses.
  • Understands the provisions of the Nurse Practice Act of the state of Rhode Island.
  • Responsible for maintaining a current knowledge of contemporary professional nursing practice within the legal framework of the Nurse Practice Act.
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology and exercise prescription required.
  • Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology with a cardiopulmonary specialization preferred.
  • Experience should include EKG and rhythm strip interpretation.
  • American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist certification preferred.
  • Current Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required; may obtain within six months of appointment.
Work Environment and Physical Requirements

This position is located in a healthcare environment such as acute care hospitals, physicians' offices, and ancillary healthcare enterprises. The incumbent will work with medical equipment and have direct patient contact. Any potential hazards are minimized or nullified by adherence to established safety procedures and precautions, including the use of safety equipment and protective clothing.

Prolonged sitting, standing, and walking may be required. The incumbent may be required to lift/turn patients and equipment, and repeated bending, squatting, and stooping may be necessary.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position may be assigned technical supervisory responsibility for up to eight FTEs. Supervision will be limited to assigning work, scheduling, providing technical oversight, training, guidance, and counsel. The incumbent may provide input for performance evaluations.
