Clinical Support Specialist

The primary purpose of this role is to provide clinical support to physicians, educate patients and families, and work collaboratively with the office team within the context of the Nurse Practice Act of Ohio.
Responsibilities & Expectations
- Perform phone triage and have direct patient contact to ensure timely return calls to patients and/or family.
- Check physician schedules frequently for any add-ons or updates.
- Inspect patient medical records prior to visits to ensure completeness and availability of test results.
- Room patients in a timely manner, identifying patients and comparing with charts, obtaining vital signs, height, weight, and current medications, and all pertinent information needed for physicians to assess patients.
- Refill prescriptions according to policy and protocol.
- Arrange for various tests, including scheduling hospital procedures and out-patient tests, precertification, authorizations, physician orders, communicating with patients, and putting on physician schedules if necessary.
- Schedule urgent and non-urgent appointments.
- Accurately complete medical forms and route billing information to appropriate staff.
- Assist with setting up and performing office and hospital procedures as directed.
- Copy and release medical records according to office procedures.
- Document patient interactions properly and legally in patient charts.
- Educate patients on testing and medications ordered.
- Return phone calls to patients by the end of the business day.
- Notify physicians immediately of abnormal lab results and notify patients accordingly during the same business day.
- Restock and clean exam rooms after use according to protocol.
- Use the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to accurately document and inform physicians of patient interactions.
- Accurately scribe for providers as directed.
- Work independently managing the nurse schedule.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Practice Manager and/or Clinical Lead.
Working Conditions
- Typically works 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday, with a lunch break daily, coordinated with other staff members for adequate coverage.
- May require paid overtime before or after normal working hours.
- Subject to frequent interruptions during performance of duties.
- Expected to adhere to office policy and procedures.
- Subject to blood and body fluid exposure.
